Tel Aviv to Amman

Im heading to Tel Aviv on a five day trip in September, I was looking to do a day trip over to Petra but seems to be outrageously expensive.I was wondering how feasible it is to travel from Tel Aviv to Amman by public transport for the day? Has anyone has got any tips/ideas on how it could be done? Equally if anyone has any tips on hidden gems in terms of bars/sights to check out in TLV also appreciated!
Many thanks.

Heading from Tel Aviv to Amman on public transportation will be a lost day. Might as well fly RJ, TLV-AMM.

Flying TLV-AMM will be terribly expensive. If you happen to have BA Avios, that's a very good use of them (at 9000 points per leg).
But honestly, even if it's feasible, Petra is not really a day trip from Tel Aviv; it will be extremely rushed. Petra deserves more patience (and certainly Tel Aviv, and Israel in general, deserve more than five days).

Although redeeming Avios is a steal, the add-on charges are atrocious. Seems both countries levy hefty exit fees.

Amman-Petra is twice as far as Aqaba-Petra, so if you really want to make a day-trip there, you'll save yourself many kilometers by flying to Eilat instead of flying to Amman.
