Regarding TLV, there's no fee. If your bank charges a fee, then it's no different whether it's in the airport or anywhere else. The total fee paid (whether it's a $2-5 fee or a 1-2% fee) will likely still be less than the total fee paid if changing cash at the airport.

Sometimes if Im not in a rush and I have to wait for my bags anyway, I ask at the exchange booths how much local currency will I get if I give you a $100 bill, then I will ask again in the arrivals hall after clearing C&I, almost every time you end up getting more in the arrival halls then what they were willing to give you before clearing C&I, at times its the same outfit as well Each Country has its pros and cons, havent asked at the booths pre Mechas @ TLV in along time I will try to when I get in this Fri afternoon, have bags to wait for anyway. The last time I think it was close to a 10% loss, sure they dont charge a commission they make up for it by giving a very low rate. With enough Suckers falling for it Im sure they make out very well as is the case with most airports around the World also if ones bank charges for withdrawls from any ATM but theirs, if its a fixed % w/o a min then thats good as you can withdraw as many times as you need to so you can take as little as you need.If theres a min charge % or $ wise then its best to load up with as much as you think youd need to avoid being hit every time you use an ATM. 1 large withdrawl will cost less (usually) then many small ones.Problem is taking out way too much will mean changing it back and costing a nice loss. Its alot easier if you will be paying for a hotel. lets say. What I usually wil do is as Im checking out of my last Hotel in that Country (if their currency is only good there unlike the USD or Euro) I simply give them all the local bills and coins I have and dont need in order to get to the airport and tell them to charge my CC for any amount over what I gave them. Problem is lately Ive been having my Hotels as award stays = $0, so Im very careful with what I take out of an ATM |
I checked with my bank (SunTrust) and the charge for ATM use is:
3% of the amount plus $5. Total cost for $500 is $20. I guess this the way I'll go. |
