There aren't really any 'must see' attractions in Bahrain IMHO, but there's plenty to see and do, depending on your preferences.

It's a compact, friendly and relatively free and relaxed place, by ME standards.

thanks
is it best to have a car to go round?

also presume chances of a daytrip to saudi almost nil?

Not for the city area (Manama). The entire country is less than 300 sq mi ! Possibly if you wanted to go to see the Tree of Life.

Less than almost nil :D KSA doesn't issue tourist visas, so unless you know someone who could invite/sponsor, you're out of luck.

The causeway is impressive from an engineering perspective, but the other end (Dammam, Khobar, etc) is pretty unremarkable.

You'll find plenty of Saudis to talk to in the bars in Bahrain

You can drive down to the mid-way point of the Causeway and have a meal at the tower that looks out over Saudi Arabia.

Not a lot. The Tree of Life is, indeed, one of the key attractions. The souk is probably the most interesting part of the trip but don't wander too far afield from there into the Shiite area given recent tensions.

You need a sponsor over to Saudi. But, only interesting if you have a local who can safely take you through the markets of Khobar, etc.
