Strike to Shutdown TLV Next Week?

The Jerusalem Post reports that Histadrut (General Labor Union) calls general strike to begin next week.

Strike called after negotiations with Finance Ministry break down; will affect airports, ports, gov't offices and more.
If this goes through, TLV, as well as ETH/VDA, and ports by Eilat, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Tel Aviv, Jaffa, and Haifa, could be affected.

Port of Jaffa?!
Did not know that it's been in working order for the past half a century???

I was surprised when I saw it in an article (Hebrew from the Histadrut,) but I figured, include it anyways.

This might work the same way as it has done before -
a low-ish scale strike covering non-essential services, leading up to a full-scale strike which cripples the economy (airports, ports etc in stage 2).

The labour unions once again doing their best to remind everyone how much power they can wield.

UPDATE

THE STRIKE, WHICH AFFECTED TLV, HAS ENDED. IT ENDED AT 10:00AM FOLLOWING A COURT RULING, AND THE LABOR UNION AND FINANCE MINISTRY ARE IN COURT-SUPERVISED TALKS UNTIL AT LEAST THURSDAY, 12:00PM.

All operations in Israel, including the airports, seaports, public transportation, government offices, banks... are up and running on a normal schedule.

Strike to start tomorrow

Just when you thought you were in the clear...

The Histadrut (Israel Labor Federation) has decided to go ahead with a strike after the High Court injunction against it was removed last week.

If the strike isn't called off at the last minute, here's what will be affected:
  • TLV airport - will be closed from 06:00-12:00, though emergency flights will be allowed to land. It will operate at other hours, and will open early (04:00). LY will push a bunch of flights up to get them out before 06:00. CONTACT YOUR AIRLINE FOR UP TO DATE INFORMATION!
  • Seaports: Haifa, Eilat, and Ashdod will all be closed
  • Train - will be on strike
  • Buses - at least Egged and Dan, the 2 largest bus companies, WILL RUN NORMALLY!
  • Banks - staff at the following banks will be on strike: Leumi, Hapoalim, Mizrachi-Tefachot, Beinleumi, Discount, Mercantile, Mahesh, Yahav, Massad, Idud, Igud, Arab Israel, Makhish, and Otzer Hachayl

Bunch of other culture centers (such as Israel Museum,) companies (such as Electric Company,) offices (such as the Post Office) will also be on strike.

Here's the Jerusalem Post article Who will strike and what services will be affected

Thanks for sharing that. From the sounds of the article the airport is closed until noon on Wed. 15th.

Is this a one day protest?
Daughter flying on Wed. the 15th, arriving Thurs. with Air Canada

The National Labor Court has ended the strike at TLV. It will continue throughout the country until a deal is in place (looks like that may be imminent,) but TLV will be functioning as normal now.

CO85 took off just 19 minutes late; everything is running as it should be, so your daughter should be fine on Wed.

I'm flying the same day (though CONSIDERABLY earlier ) so I'm also praying there won't be a problem (though it doesn't like there will be).

Airlines have been rearranging their schedules to facilitate arrival either before or after the 6 hour strike window. Make sure you check with your airline!

That happened yesterday, but is it still happening today?

Enjoy your trip and let's hope the weather is nice.

No Buses; yes trains

Update to the strike: TLV and all ports remain open on normal operating schedules.

The train will resume normal operations tomorrow (Sunday, Feb 12) at 09:00. Buses (Egged, Dan, Kavim at least) will be on strike. No word yet whether this is on all routes, but for now, plan for the worst. They will strike indefinitely (until the Histadrut and Treasury come to an agreement).

Government offices, banks, post offices, etc. remain closed.

Thanks! Hope the weather is nice though I also hope there's snow so I can ski!

nobody-elite Feb 11, 2012 12:23 pm

Hmmmmm. Not keen on the snow idea :).

joshwex90 Feb 11, 2012 12:31 pm

As long as there's good snow in Vermont (or even the Poconos) I'll be happy
