Imported Cider in DC?
I'm coming "home" to DC on my holiday to visit friends and go camping. I've recently become quite addicted to both Bulmer's and Kopparberg as a summer beverage. Does anyone know where I can buy Bulmer's/Magner's in bottles? (I know of several irish pubs I can have it in, but would like to take it with me camping). Also, has Kopparberg pear cider (or other varieties) made it to the US from Sweden? (I'd take in-pub suggestions on this one as well!)
Thanks! |

I think chevvy chase:
http://www.chevychasewine.com/ carries bulmer & manger do a search for cider. what are those $14-15 ciders???? |
I don't know if it's acceptable substitute but I think Total Beverage carries Woodchuck cider.

Thanks for the Chevy Chase Link!
Sadly Woodchuck is not an acceptable substitute. While its widely available, I don't find it very tasty. Though I've never tried their perry so perhaps I'll investigate that. |
I had a look at some local places to see if they export but sadly they don't. But you can get some info from www.dunkertons.co.uk and http://www.orchard-hive-and-vine.co.uk/

I've occasionally seen Magner's at several neighbourhood liquor stores as well as Strongbow (Yes, I know it's made by poms)...
As far as pubs, the Brickskeller over on 23rd and P generally has a fairly good selection, but it's only in bottles and their inventory is very variable. |

I know I can get it at the Brick, and several Irish Bars much closer to where I'll be crashing my first night (both Fado's and the Irish Channel in Chinatown have it), but I'm really looking for the portability factor. |
On a couple of occasions, I have seen Magners over at Sherry's Liquors in Woodley (Calvert and Conn.). It's a bit of a crap shoot, however. Most of the hogher end LQ stores in town should have one or the other.

Strongbow is actually made by the Bulmer's people.
Strongbow is made by an English company called HP Bulmer Ltd (They also make Scrumpyjack & Woodpecker). While Bulmers (Magners outside Ireland) is made by an Irish company called Bulmers Ltd. Given the choice, I would take a Pear or Blueberry Kopparberg over any of the above brands. |
