The weather should be delightful this weekend in this area. I doubt that the distance from the Marriott to 2941 is more than half a mile and you can walk it in 15 minutes. There is a sidewalk and crosswalks all the way along the east side of Fairview Park Drive. Not a very pretty walk, especially when crossing over Route 50, but a great way to work off some of dinner. By the way the chef's father, Malcolm Krinn, bakes all the breads - and they are to-die-for.

I took a look at their website and they do have a nice looking menu. Unfortunately I am on the Atkins diet and will not be able to partake in the delectable bread assortment. Thanks to all, I will definitely check it out this weekend :)

If you continue to stay at the same place I have some food suggestions ... just West on 50 (about 1 light) is a big shopping center with Costco & Target.
In there is a Famous Dave's BBQ which is pretty good & if you get chicken, surprisingly healthy.
There is also a Chipotle in there and as somoene mentioned Five Guys for burgers.
I think there is also a kabob place in there or maybe it's a pita place. I've heard to stay away from the Cici's pizza buffet place.

Across 50 from the hotel in the Sullyfield business park is a great little lunch place called Tastebuds Cafe.

Also as someone mentioned, East on 50 is a Bonefish.

:)

I have to agree with some of the others about the Washington Dulles Marriott Suites. While it's not located exactly south of IAD, it's very close to the airport and close to the Chantilly area as well - just take Centreville Road south a couple miles and it intersects Rt 50. Traffic along Centreville Road is never what I would consider real bad.

The Marriott Suites is located in Herndon and is situated in the Worldgate Shopping Center. There are plenty of nice restaurants in that center.

Additionally, the Herndon area has a number of unique and diverse restaurants. You can go to herndoncuisine.com and see what the area has to offer as well as view some reviews.

And Nuyawkr, being from New York you undoubtedly must like pizza? There is a nice place called Rubino's located in the Herndon area off of Centreville Road in the Clocktower Shopping Center. They have NY style pizza by the slice or you can grab a whole pie. Good stuff! You can read what others have to say about that place on herndoncuisine. To get to the Clocktower Shopping Center take Centreville Road to Sunrise Valley Drive. The shopping center is on the corner.

Hope this helps!

If you want to stay in Reston, there's also the Sheraton on Sunrise Valley in addition to the other options, which is near some chain stuff and Town Center as well as all of the restaurants at Lake Anne. You can also head down Sunrise Valley to the Clocktower shopping center for Thai, Japanese, kebabs, Indian, or Chuck E. Cheese (everyone loves the ball room, right?).

I think the great options in Herndon have already been pointed out.

Used to stay at that Sheraton from time to time when it was absolutely necessary and it was slowly going downhill. Last time I stayed there about a year ago the whole place was permeated with an unpleasant musty odor.

The Marriott @ Dulles Town Center is pretty good, far superior to the one in Chantilly and IMO better than the one @ the airport. Other decent places to eat that I didn't see mentioned are any of the Sweetwater restaurants and the M&S Grille in Reston Town Center.

As others have said, make time to grab a burger @ any of the 5 Guys. 1 bag of fries is more than enough for 2 people.

Yes, 5 Guys is pretty good but VERY greasy! Just make sure you have some antacid with you. I get a pretty good case of heartburn every time I eat there! ;)

ratracer, I think they've done some work on the Sheraton Reston, because my family and many of the guests for my bridal shower last August stayed there and I hung out with them and it wasn't musty and was surprisingly nice, actually (I had thought it was a grotty old place and was strongly recommending the Town Center Hyatt). I actually liked it better than the Hyatt, where many of my colleagues often stay.

I'm going to second all the food options in Worldgate as well. The thing about food in this part of Northern Virginia is that there are plenty of good options, you just need to know where to look.

For the OP: If you stay frequently at Marriott hotels, you should earn points because you will (1) earn elite bonuses, (2) be able to participate in Marriott promotions (like the current MegaBonus promo), and (3) use the points to either trade for more miles or buy a travel package which will let you buy up to 120,000 miles at one mile per point, in addition to 7 nights at a Marriott hotel.

Wow. I do a MR to PDX over the weekend and all sorts of great suggestions appear. :D

I appreciate the advice. I just switched my Marriotts account to points after doing some more reading in this thread. Recently we've been staying at various other hotels for miles in DL's current partner bonus promotion, so I haven't had an opportunity to stay at a Marriott since making silver a few weeks ago.

We'll probably be at the Sheraton on Sunrise Valley this week, as we have a meeting on the North side of IAD on Tuesday. I'd heard that it was run-down.

The suggestions for the Washington Dulles Marriott Suites and 2941 are much appreciated.

Finally, the contractors have a tendency to feed us Domino's or Papa John's for lunch when they want to work through lunch... It was a Big Deal when someone finally found Baja Fresh! As much as the nuyawkr in me likes pizza, the repetition has put me off it for a while.

I know the shopping center you're talking about with the 7-11; I'll look for the Thai place more closely the next time we swing through. We've played at Buffalo Billiards with some of the contractors, but haven't tried the food. Anita's is where we usually eat lunch if we manage an early finish as we're pointing in the right direction on 50 to get back to DCA. I'll have to see if I can convince the others to drive to Fair Oaks.

Try Picante in that 7-11 center. Individual taste and results vary, of course, but I ate at an Anita's once and a second trip is very unlikely (I have lived here 12 years). Picante, though, I visit again and again.

DJ_Iceman May 15, 2007 7:23 pm

Thanks for the tip on Picante. I also tried Anita's only once and was quite disappointed, but Picante is now an OpenTable place so I've been quite tempted to give it a try...
