Incidentally, I also found in one of the older posts upthread a reference to some public event promoting the ability to walk to DCA, and in conjunction with that someone made this Google map of the various walking paths:

the one we've been discussing most recently is the dark blue one. The yellow one might be more relevant if starting from T1 and going to points further south on Crystal Drive; I may investigate that path the next time I'm bored (but probably not until the weather warms up a bit :D)
