Restaurants in Washington DC

Hi all

Could someone please recommend a decent restaurant near to Dupont Circle in Washington DC? French or Spanish (including Tapas) would be absolutely perfect.

Cheers

Hi

To be honest (and I mean this in the nicest possible way), you might have better luck posting this on another forum, specifically one with more travellers who know the DC area. Perhaps the United forum (given the IAD hub) would give you more satisfactory answers?

the post is in the DC forum, I'd say its placement is just fine, although the DININGBuzz forum is focused on food & restaurants and may help. It does not belong in the UA forum and will be bumped if placed there.

OP - Jaleo is a big tapas favorite in DC and Taberna del Alabardero (1776 I St) is closer and serves great spanish food. Looking at the zagats entry for the latter, it says the King of Spain eats there when he visits ;)

There is another thread on DC restaurants (at least one) in the diningbuzz forum, so you might want to peek around there, as well.

?????????????????????????????????? good idea for denver and chicago, san fransisco and LA, but for DC area, I would think the southwest site better.

don't know how far out you consider the dupont circle area, but to my mind, that is not a big restaurant area in dc. Komi is New Amer., and probably among the best in dc area. I have never eaten there. Obelisk is sort of italian, sort of fish, and among the best in dc(tough to get a table).I do not eat in that area often, as parking is pure hell, even at 6:30(parking becomes street legal at 6:30).

to south,

I like restaurant kolumbia at 18th & k.

M st is not that far, where indoneasian tapas(malasian kopitam) and 19th st the expense acct restaurants(taberna, viadalia, palm, teatro). blue duck is new, but has a great chef.

but for variety, I think you have to go toward chinatown, and penn ave.

for tapas, Jaleo, around 7th & h. also in the area is cafe atlantico(nouveo something), and Oya(?) is brand new, brought to you by the jaleo guy.

the 18th & U st area has very interesting food. low rent, so decent prices.

Bistro du Coin is probably the best French option immediately in Dupont, at Connecticut and R.

Outside of Dupont, I can recommend Bistro Lepic for French in upper Georgetown, on Wisconsin Ave. Very small place, but nice atmosphere and good food.

Well, of course, since this is a destination forum, the Washington, DC forum is best, but I am surprise that you think Southwest would be better than UA given that IAD is a UA hub.

Back to the original question, Taberna del Alabardero as previously mentioned is on 18th Street at I, a 6 block walk from Dupont Circle and does serve tapas in the afternoons, but I think goes back to a regular (and very good) menu for the evening hours.

If we are straying as far as Bistro Lepic in Georgetown, I think you can't ignore Bistro Francais on M Street in Georgetown which has the advantage of being open very late if you need that. It is where Washington's chefs hang out once their own restaurants have closed.

It was a joke. the post, of course belongs here, but if you are going to put it in an airline forum, Why not southwest? southwest has a major hub in BWI, and probably moves close to as many dc area people as ua at iad.

Jaleo as somebody else has mentioned is very good for tapas.

Amongst some of the most esteemed DC restaurants are French: Citronelle in Georgetown, and Gerard's Place in downtown.

There are a lot of good restaurants in the DuPont area but few that I would consider "great." Outside of the immediate neighborhood, try Lebanese Taverna on Connecticut Ave in Woodley Park (5 minute cab ride or about 2 metro stops on red line from DuPont) as an alternative to tapas; same concept of small plates, noshing, sharing, etc, but with Lebanese cuisine. Quite good...

1789 in Georgetown is a good "old familiar."

If you're looking for "good" and not "knock your socks off" then stay in DuPont... Bistro du Coin (as posted above) is always a nice choice.

There's no longer a Gerard Pangaud at Gerard's Place (915 15th St. NW; 202-737-4445). But you'd never know that by scanning the menu, which is much the same as it was -- delicious and dear -- before the veteran French chef left the kitchen for the classroom at L'Academie de Cuisine last summer.
Tom Sietsema still likes the place, though.

If you want to stay strictly in the Dupont Circle area, I love this place:

Though I'm a bigger fan in the summer time when the roof is open. I'm glad that it reopened after a four year closure--I have many fine memories from there.

I am a big fan of Montmartre, a bistro-type place on 7th St SE next to the Eastern Market metro. Bit of a hike from Dupont, though.

Generally, restaurants in DC will give you decent food at sky-high prices. Good luck.

Not wanting to start a new thread, I was wondering what your restaurant recommendations were for ordinary people, not looking for the best (read: most expensive) nor any particular cuisine. Something that isn't a tourist trip nor pretentious, but rather somewhere a local would have a meal at. As a consequence, I've already written off the entire G'town area ;)

Examples of what I'm looking for:
--Rudy's BBQ in Austin.
--Shapiro's Deli in Indianapolis.
--Squat and Gobble in San Francisco.
--Katz's in NYC (ok, a little touristy is ok)
--In-n-Out in LA ;)
--5 Guys and the Chili Bowl in DC.

Thanks!

Don't write off Georgetown so fast! Mie n Yu is outstanding and reasonable. You already mentioned 5 Guys, but how about Red Hot n Blue? And Capital City Brewing Company is a decent local place as well.
