14th St, Washington, DC?
So I collect little notes about places so I have places to checkout when I go there the next time. I'll be in DC in a bit, and awhile ago I read the following; I think this may have come off the National Building Museum website for a walking tour or something...
"When it comes to great food, shopping and design, there’s no street like 14th Street! Take a stroll through DC's hippest new neighborhood..." Can anyone tell me what part of 14th St this is? Also, what kind of design stores are there? Thanks, BillJ |
I think you can probably throw that note away. ;) There's nothing particularly special about 14th Street and no special neighborhood built around it.

There are a few resale furniture shops up the street and more furniture places on U Street. The big design center they are planning next to the Studio Theatre isn't open yet. And Logan Circle definitely is one of the most popular neighborhoods now. Even the hookers still hang around though ;-)
The Logan Circle/U Street Corridor neighborhood is definitely worth a walk through, especially from Mass Ave to U St.. taking a peek down the residential streets. Don't be fooled by the unfinished, under-construction appearance of 14th St coz the real estate prices of the surrounding neighborhoods are anything but up-and-coming. Gentrification is happening at a furious pace (much to some ppl's dismay or delight) and spreading eastward from Dupont. 14th St happens to be the first of many neighborhoods, with Whole Foods as the catalyst. It wasn't 5 years ago that most ppl I know wouldn't venture beyond 16th St. Now, everyone wants to live there! :) |
Adam's Morgan and U Street Corridor is what they are talking about. A lot of college kids hang out there and there are plenty of forign resturants. There are a lot of night clubs. But be careful, dont get lost a couple of blocks away you are in the hood.

It's interesting that the posters from Arlington (not the District) and IAD (at least 40 minutes from DC) say negative things about the area. It's true there is not a Ruby Tuesdays for the out of towners, but that doesn't mean there aren't some good restaurants and bars. I'd add Utopia at 14th and U to the prior mentioned venues. Utopia is officially U street corridor, but it is pretty close to Saints-Ex.
I take exception to the comment that a couple of blocks off 14th street is dangerous. I also disagree that they are talking about Adams Morgan or U street. Those are completely seperate neighborhoods. Adams morgan hasn't been up and coming or "new" for a while. |

It's not "dangerous", but it's not the safest area in DC or surrounding areas either.
Yes, Adams Morgan has not been "up and coming" or "new" for a bit over a decade. I can't even tell the difference between Chevy Chase and Friendship Heights. The difference between Clarendon and DC, with the exception of Georgetown, is much more pronounced. 4 Mile Run and DC are much more similar ;) . |

Other days I drive. On no occassion have I been mugged, carjacked or attacked in any way. The most dangerous thing I encounter on my ride are drivers from MD.

A few blocks off this 14th St stretch, carjackings are very rare -- i.e., I don't know anyone who's personally been victimized anywhere in DC, but anecdotal evidence is not statistical evidence -- and muggings and other criminal incidents are not as frequent as in the evening around Adams Morgan. However, car break-ins and muggings happen a plenty in comparison to Kalorama, Woodley Park, Georgetown, Dupont Circle, West End/Foggy Bottom, Mall Area and certain other parts of DC. Yes, those MD drivers don't know how to drive -- especially when it comes to roundabouts. :D |
The 4 mile run that you drive over is the "run" (aka a stream outside of the south) that the road is name after. Much of 4 mile run is a bit rundown these days. I think they have a bit of gang related activity in that area, which fortunately DC is mostly free of. I have no basis for making demographic comments so I'll steer away from that. Certainly there is more overall crime in the 3rd police distict than the 2nd. Those areas you mentioned are the best in DC. In my mind it's kind of like comparing the Upper East Side to Chelsea or the Washington Square area.
All I meant was that Rosslyn to Ballston is one chain restaurant/store after another. It is very sanitized. It is new and nice, but it has lost much of the local flavor it had not so long ago. Apologies to the OP for dragging this so far off course. :) |
