BWI Observation Station?

Hello,
I will be in BWI in a few weeks. Heard about the observation station...seems like a cool place. Is this pre/post security? Anything else I should know about this place- is it the best for aircraft spotting?
Thanks! (PS: How early should I get in for an afternoon NWA flight? Are the lines long?)

Q: Where can I observe planes taking off and landing?
A: Thomas A. Dixon Observation Area and Park is located on Dorsey Road/ Route 176 East. From 95, take 195 east, to 170 east. Make a left on Dorsey Road/ Route 176. Go three miles and the park will be on your right hand side.

This is definitely outside security.

Security at BWI is at the entrance to each pier, and the Observation Station is up from the ticketing lobby, outside of all security.

Thanks! I searched online and found maps of the trail/observation park that was posted but it seems like a 4 mile walk around the airport to get there? So I take it I'll have to take a cab from the airport to get there and take an hour's walk back?
