BWI - DCA

I did a google search and I couldn't find anything useful.

Can anyone suggest how to get info on travel between the two ?

Costs ? Time in transit, etc.

Thanks for the help.

Time, in particular, Really depends a lot on when you are making this transfer.

There are a lot of ways to do this. Most end with taking the metro from either The Greenbelt metro station, or union station to DCA. There are 21/25 busses from BWI to GB metro stop.

During serious AM rush hour in particular, there is MARC and Amtrak from the BWI station(served by shuttle bus) to Union Station.

You can find these options on:

http://www.bwiairport.com/ which is, overall, a lousy site, but better than the airport itself.

Searches are not too good, as some of the services have changed recently.

My last taxi cost $50 at 6am on a Sun.

How to:

DC taxis do not have meters. Look for one dropping people off. Agree to a rate.

Will take 1 hr at 6am on Sun, and maybe 2-3hrs at 7:30am on weekday(maybe longer).

Thank you very much for this.

I would like to do this on public transport so the taxi option is out, and I was planning on leaving at least 4 hours to achieve this, but as I have not booked yet either....

Another thought is renting a car. Avis, and maybe other rental companies, allow you to pick-up a car at DCA-IAD-BWI and drop it off at any of the other airports at no additional charge. This could be cheaper than a taxi but will likely be more than public transportation. It may be $50 from downtown to BWI, but I think that is is closer to $75 from DCA-BWI. I don't know if priceline rentals may be returned to different airports than the one rented from, but if so it could be as little as $20 from DCA-BWI. I would gladly pay $20 to avoid 4 hours of public transport. Keep in mind that at rush hour, morning or evening, this trip could take 2 hours plus.

BWI-DCA is $39/1st person + $10/each additional person (they shuttle people in the mini van). It is http://www.supershuttle.com/ if you are interested. They are only $20 (+$10 each addl person) for DCA to IAD if you ever have to do that.

Also, you can take Amtrak from BWI rail to Washington Union Station, then you can take the subway from union station to DCA. I think BWI Rail is like a mile from the BWI Air terminals, I'm not sure what the ground transportation is like to get to it. You might find a tram, have to walk, or at worst pay a cab if you are watching the $. But, it can't cost much to get there. The train ride is $9, you need reservations. Then, I haven't taken the metro in a while, but I can't imagine the fare would be any more then $3 from Union station to DCA. Still under $20 if you had to take a cab from BWI to BWI rail. Maybe someone else can explain how to get between the two.

There is a free shuttle bus that takes you between the BWI terminals and the BWI Amtrak stop. The same routine as taking a shuttle bus between terminals and parking lots. There is parking at the Amtrak stop as well.

My experience has been that if going from BWI to a Virginia destination, it can be more convenient to transfer from MARC to the Metro at New Carrolton (direct trains to Rosslyn/Vienna, same-platform transfer at Rosslyn to DCA, and less walking in general between trains).

I agree with yonatan about the switch at New Carrolton. It is really an inexpensive and convenient way to get deep into Virginia, altho it does take some time.
