restaurants at Dulles IAD?
I have a 5 1/2 hour layover at IAD in April, arriving at 11:35 in time for lunch. Are there any decent restaurants at the airport for a sit down meal to kill some time?? Or should I just use the lounge available for travel in business class on South African, the Lufthansa Lounge I believe I can use.

Here's a link to the full-service (i.e. not fast-food) dining at Dulles: http://www.metwashairports.com/dulles/732.htm
In particular Vino Volo in the B Concourse has a very nice small-plate menu and good wine selections. It is just a few steps from the LH lounge, which also has quite decent food and bar offerings. I would check out both and then decide. In addition, the A/B concourse (from A14 up to B79) has lots of nice shops and other food services. |
I'm a fan of Max and Erma's myself, they're good for a burger and a beer.

I haven't been to a Max & Erma's in over 20 years. They used to be in KC but left years ago. I remember I liked that restaurant. If the menu shown online is the same one at IAD that's where I'll go. Looks to be quite tasty!
Which is the terminal with int'l departures? |

That would be the A/B Concourse. I think Max and Erma's is towards B but I could be mistaken.

District Chophouse is now open in the Main Terminal outside security, by check in counters

There is a new Chipotle right next to train and very close to the LH lounge. But usually the food in the LH lounge is quite good and adequate for lunch. However, they close briefly around 12:00 or 13:00. It depends on the schedule of carriers that use the lounge. It is open in the morning for ANA, which departs 12:XX or 13:XX depending on the time of year. Now it is closed 13:00-14:30 but that might change with the start of the summer schedule. Europe still being on winter time might also be a factor as well as the ANA departure time.
I think the LH lounge may not close after daylight savings in Europe since some flights like SAS are leaving an hour later currently. If you have priority pass then British Airways next door is open until 2 pm for non-BA pax. |
I was surprised by the sillily named Bistro Atelier in the
D concourse - had an imperfectly enjoyable time there and would go back. The LH lounge: note that the Senator lounge is often more crowded than the business facility (which has showers, another plus) downstairs. They offer the same food and booze, but it's easier to flag down staff to pour alcohol downstairs. If you're entitled to both, as so many users are, go to the less prestigious one. Here's my impression of Bistro Atelier, from a trip report to be posted in the future: As I knew that I wasn't going to get upgraded, I decided to try for a decent tasty dinner to make up for that. So the adventure begins with a stop to Bistro Atelier, a newish eatery in the D terminal at Dulles. It's a long thin space, taking up too much of the width of the corridor I think - a lot of the airports are doing this, paring down what used to be a nice airy space to a congested unpleasant one, the trimmings fashioned into rent-generating property. Interestingly, as soon as I ducked behind the host station, I was transported to a brasserie if not in Paris, at least someplace less irritating than Dulles. The bartender/server was attentive and helpful and gave me samples of a couple beers I hadn't heard of (and didn't buy). I ordered a steak frites very rare. The menu describes it as strip steak, pommes frites, house made ketchup, celeriac slaw. Well, they didn't get everything right. What was served: a ribeye with a really dreadful bordelaise on the side, fairly tasty fries, and regular slaw, no celeriac. The meat was insufficiently browned on the outside but still not quite as rare as it should have been. It tasted pretty good despite the inexpert cooking and the what has become standard overdose of salty surface seasoning. |
