Why is DCA Runway 4-22 Closed?

I flew out of DCA a few weeks ago and I noticed that the threshold of runway 4 had an X over the runway and there was some construction behind it. What are they planning to do with it? I have seen a few runway 4 takeoffs, but never a landing. I never seen a plane use 22 ever. Thoughts?

Closed for construction, indefinately.

I think that to continue using it they would have to add a runoff area and that was/is either not possible or too expensive.

There are no instrument approaches to 4/22 and it is a tad short for most jets anyway.

Wouldn't they just close the runway and convert it into a taxiway/parking like BWI did? The runway is still showing up on the Airport diagram.

Sorry, had not checked back. They closed it with a NOTAM and put the X on the ends as per normal procedure. It will take a while before it then cycles through the whole charting process and they remove the runway for good.

Any insight on plans for runway 4/22 given upcoming airport modifications?

It's supposedly in process of being rebuilt at southwest end. Shouldn't impact the new terminal because it goes in a different direction (15/33 might though).

Contractor claims to have begun some work on 4/22:

Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) Runway 04-22 Overlay & Taxiway Rehabilitation, Arlington, VA | Berner Construction

Interesting. Thanks!

I saw a Delta RJ lined up on runway 4 yesterday but I guess it was waiting to take off from runway 1.

It was rare, but every so often in the late 80s and early 90s a 727 would land on 4 and fly over my childhood home on approach.

my understanding is that a 747 once did an emergency landing at dca. after everything was stripped out of it, it took off into the wild blue yonder.

That was a DC 10. It was diverted for some reason.

33 was used extensively last Friday and Saturday during the Nor'easter. Both arrivals and departures for everything up to 737s. I've only done one or two departures off of Rwy 4 - usually a Q400.
