JFK layover
 

We have a questions that we hope one of you or more will be able to answer. We come from Denmark and are going on a road trip in the southern states.
But on the return journey we come into a problem / or a benefit :rolleyes: The airline we have just changed our flight times so we now will land in Kennedy 1340 from Orlando with Delta. We will fly to Copenhagen at 2040 with Delta from Kennedy. Is there anything we can do in all those hours (7 hours)? Is it possible to get to New York if necessary, see Times Square or similar? What about security? Having never been to New York and it is quite expensive to fly there from Denmark so would love to see just a miniscule fraction of what you so often see on television and hear about ;) Hope one of you who have the time and inclination to answer it :)

I'd think in seven hours you could definitely see Times Square and grab a meal somewhere, especially if your bags are already checked. Even via the subway, you'd have at least three hours to take a quick look around.

Yes, it's doable. At 14:00 it should be before the traffic so a taxi ride into town will cost about $50-60 and take about 40 minutes. The Airtrain/Subway http://www.panynj.gov/airports/jfk-to-from.html takes a little over an hour and costs about $8 per person including the subway ticket and the Airtrain ticket. Take the Airtrain to Jamaica and then get on the "E" subway line. Get off at "7th Avenue" and you can walk to Times Square in 5 minutes. Coming back to the airport, I'd suggest the train as you'll want to be back at the airport around 1900 and you'll otherwise get stuck in traffic if you leave town at 1800. (Not sure if they still have the helicopter service from the East 30th street heliport). If you stick to Midtown Manhattan, there's a lot you can see at that hour and mostly on foot. You'll have 3 hours in town so you can go to the "Top of the Rock" at Rockefeller center for a view of the city. Have a corned beef or pastrami sandwich at the Carnegie Deli on 7th Avenue. Walk around Central Park, go to the Museum of Modern Art, Times Square, etc.

If headed to Times Square, why get off the E train at 7th Avenue and 53rd Street, instead of staying on to 42nd Street and 8th Avenue?

Because Times Square starts at around 48th and it's a much more dramatic and beautiful approach to come down Broadway than to come across 42nd and have to deal with the masses at the Port Authority bus station. Believe me - I lived at 55th and broadway for many years.

I agree with NYTA on this one.
