DC Metro App
I'm looking for the best (or at least good) Android Metro App. I see there are many. Also, is there a good App for DC in general? Any suggestions?
Thanks. |
For looking up the time of the next Metro train or nearby buses, I usually stick with WMATA's own site. You have to select a Metro station for train estimates, but the NextBus link works off your phone's location.
As far as apps go, RideScout looks promising--it lets you compare travel times via train, Metro and other bus systems, bike, Capital Bikeshare, taxi, driving, walking--but on Android it's basically the RideScout site encapsulated in an app. The iOS version feels a lot more solid; a "real" Android version is supposed to be on the way. |
I like nextbus--has realtime info on the next bus or train that will service any given stop. It does, I think, presuppose that you know how to get from A to B, however. I primarily use it for buses, not trains. For route planning, the wmata site is great, but it gives you scheduled times of arrival, not real time information.
For real time information on trains, http://how....edismetro.com/ (or the more genteel, SFW version, http://howsmetro.com/). |
I use DC Metro Transit for both bus and rail arrivals, and Google's Field Trip to learn about local history (and sights) while traveling.
|
For route planning purposes, I like Metro - the app has been around since the golden age of the PalmOS and provides excellent routing advice using a simple interface. The only downside is no live data re: next train, so for that I'd use the WMATA's mobile site.

Thanks for all the replies. I have yet to chose one, but this will help.

DC Metro Transit has been my favorite for information on the subway, but for bus information, I like Bus Track DC. It has a better layout of predicted bus arrivals when multiple lines use the same stop.

This may be too late for OP, but for others in the future: the Washington Post's DC Rider (also available on iPhone) is free, has a system map and trip planner, will give you a live "next train" feed for your station, and will even tell you the fare for your trip. I commute on metro every day, and use the app frequently.
