Any decent food at BWI?
I've got to fly to the West Coast in January, departing BWI. Any place that has decent food to either eat before my flight (United) or bring aboard?

United flies out of Terminal D. I'm a Delta flier, so I'm used to that terminal. The best food IMHO in D is the Greene Turtle. It's a sports bar chain and has what you'd expect for that sort of place, although I remember being pleasantly surprised by a soup and salad combo I once ordered there. If you're looking for a sitdown restaurant in D I'd definitely pick that over Chesapeake Cafe which is closer to the UA gates.
If you have an AMEX Plat card you can use the Airspace Lounge for free. They seem to have recently removed lunch/dinner sandwiches from their menu, but they still have a breakfast sandwich. I had the antipasto platter last time; it was tasty but probably not filling enough prior to a TCON flight. If you want to eat outside security and enjoy craft beer I recommend DuClaw Brewing Company. The brewery is a few miles from the airport, and they have a restaurant near the entrance to B terminal security (Southwest terminal). The food is OK, but the beer is pretty good. For reference, here is a dining map of the airport. You can see the options for fast food as well. I think the only option I didn't mention that has seating is Pepper's which is a chain I've never tried and is down towards the end of the DL gates. Security at D is usually pretty backed up, at least when I'm flying out on Sunday afternoons. The regular line wraps down the hallway to the left of the security entrance. Stay to the right for the priority line and PreCheck. It's kind of congested there with the escalator very close to the entrance, but if you stay right you should be fine. |
Another vote for the Greene Turtle. It's the best of the airside bunch in D, IMO.

It's seriously bad IMHO. I used to go there b/c there was no other decent place to sit down in D, but have since found a new home when in BWI. The Turtle's salads often have excessive browning. And ordering a crab cake and a beer came to around $25 with tip and the crab cake might be the worst in Baltimore. It's still the only actual sit-down restaurant in D, but there are better options both before and after D security. Mattp covered those other options well. |
