I've been following this forum as I'm planning to travel to the Cancun area from Oct. 9-16, 2012 and noticed your previous forum post noting that orders for SIM cards must be made before the 4th of the month in order to get it for the following month (or, I could have read that wrong). Since I'm traveling to Mexico in a little under 3 weeks, is it too late to order?

I have an unlocked Samsung Galaxy Nexus and don't really anticipate needing to make voice calls while there, but will be needing data for maps/travel info. So I was looking at buying a 30-day SIM card + 3GB of data.

If I ordered today (9/19/12), would I be able to receive the SIM card by 9/28/12 before I leave town? I'm traveling within the US for a week prior to leaving the US on 10/9/12.

I bought mine with a 1GB data package for 39.95$, it was just enough for my trip and I didn't have to find a dealer. The website I bought from is www.mexicosimcard.com

On my last trip to Cancun, I bought a SIM online from Mexico SIM card and was quite satisfied with it.

I used Movistar for cell service there and it wasn't that bad.

I'm going to be in Mexico City for 6 days and wanted to be able to use a phone with a good bit of cellular data while I'm there. My cell service here in the states is Virgin Mobile USA, which is a cheap prepaid Sprint MVNO that has no international coverage (trust me when I say that they don't offer it at all and there's no way to swap SIMs or anything like that)--so that's out of the question.

Is it feasible to buy a prepaid phone in Mexico City for the time there? I did a little Google'ing but am confused about whether this is even possible, how much it'd cost, and whether it's something I'd be able to do with limited Spanish-language knowledge.

I would highly recommend going with Telcel, since they have the best coverage, in the country about 95% of all Mexico. If you have gsm unlocked phone you can buy a SIM card for about 15 usd. You can buy it at a Telcel store or there are probably some resellers If you have any questions let me know.

I hate to cross-post, but the Travel Technology forum seems like a black hole for this particular subject, and I'm in need of a fairly quick response.

My resort had wifi coverage in most of the places (and 4/4 bars of mobile service...)

Prompt and personalised service. I ordered one TelCel and one Lusacel sim card as I wanted to do some testing while in the Riveria Maya over 2013/14 Christmas/New Year. Vincent emailed with recomendation that TelCel had the best reception and I may be unhappy with the Lusacel sim during my stay. After several emails, we agreed to change my order to two TelCel sims (as we several in our trip that wanted to stay in contact while off resort). Vincent dind't add any additional charge even though I actually 'upgraded' the minutes/data with the change.

It may be a few dollars more expensive than purchasing directly from the carrier or reseller while in Mexico, but the comfort of having an activated sim in hand before you even land is well worth the few extra dollars.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but do the SIM cards sold by mexicosimcard.com support Personal Hotspot on the iPhone/iPad by any chance? Didn't find anything on the site about it and I remember that AT&T, etc. used to block it in the past unless you bought an extra tethering plan.

Can't speak to the ones sold by mexicosimcard.com, but my Telcel card purchased in Mexico City (from a random kiosk) offered it.

In fact, in the couple dozen SIMs I've purchased overseas, I've never had Personal Hotspot not enabled.

Makes sense; disabling it was probably more of a thing when US carriers used to offer unlimited data. Thanks!

Cancun/Isla Mujeres
 

Stumbled in to this thread after searching for topics on swapping sim cards when I go to cancun and isla mujeres.

I hv an S4 and am thinking the same when I go to Isla in a few weeks. So my question is can you get a sim card in Cancun and where? Which phone co to choose? Sounds like Telcel is suggested here.

Does google maps work on Isla? Thats mainly what I will use it for besides checking email. I have found google maps to be a great gps when I am travelling.

You can buy and top up prepaid SIM cards (SIMs are called 'chip' in Mexico, 'prepago' is prepaid) at any of the ubiquitous OXXO convenience stores. I can't remember which ones they service - I had both Iusacell and Telcel (best coverage) in my dual-SIM card while living in Mexico City earlier this year. I think Movistar is the cheapest provider.
