Sorry. Didn't mean to offend you. Just wanted to make it clear nobody should ever resell a pay as you go sim. I can help you phone your son for 39 cents a minute. You can Text him for 25 cents. Incoming text are free. Our data rate is 3.99 a mb, so you can even exchange a few emails for a reasonable cost.
If you have any more questions please let me know. Or send me a pm. I promise to do what I can. Doug |
Problem with billing - bright roam
So we got two sim cards in December with the mexico sim promotion (free mexico sim cards) (Doug's post on Nov. 9, 11) I received a bill in March charging full amount for those two sims (2x39 = $78). I am waiting on the phone for last 20 min hoping that someone will come in and quickly resolve this. Anyone else with similar problem? Doug, is this a simple computer glitch or was there some fine print there saying we will charge you after three months?
Thanks Update: After 25 minutes of wait .. I am told that this will be taken care of in 24 hours and it was a mistake. I asked them to remove my credit card information from their system to not get similar surprises. The support person said he will request it but can not guarantee. (Last use of the sim card was 3.5 months ago and I closed the sim cards 3 months ago ..) |
Hi Akel:
Sorry for the inconvenience. We have two systems: an ecommerce one and a billing one. The coupon worked on one system, but not the other. So the billing system made a mistake. We are reversing the charges. But PM me your name and if possible account number. I'll make sure they reverse the charge on your account right away. Hope you enjoyed your trip. |
OK, sorry to re-animate this thread, but I've just noticed the ads popping up all over the Flyertalk, and remembered I'd never actually reported my experience with this service last year in Mexico. So, it was great. Absolutely painless, great and fast customer service, provided I ordered it at the last possible minute. The card started working immediately upon landing and kept working all the time I was in Cancun. The billing was accurate except a single $1 charge for a call to Europe I never made, but one email took care of that. All in all, very positive experience. Thanks, Doug, if you're still around:).
|
Glad you enjoyed your experience.
Thanks for the feedback. I'm still around. The ads are my doing. Let me know if you find them excessive. Or if anyone else finds them excessive. (I'm working hard to only show them to people who will be travelling in the next couple of weeks, but that's easier to say than to do.)

Hi Doug,
I've been following this forum as I'm planning to travel to the Cancun area from Oct. 9-16, 2012 and noticed your previous forum post noting that orders for SIM cards must be made before the 4th of the month in order to get it for the following month (or, I could have read that wrong). Since I'm traveling to Mexico in a little under 3 weeks, is it too late to order? I have an unlocked Samsung Galaxy Nexus and don't really anticipate needing to make voice calls while there, but will be needing data for maps/travel info. So I was looking at buying a 30-day SIM card + 3GB of data. If I ordered today (9/19/12), would I be able to receive the SIM card by 9/28/12 before I leave town? I'm traveling within the US for a week prior to leaving the US on 10/9/12. Thanks! Brett |
Buy the SIM before you get in Mexico
I bought mine with a 1GB data package for 39.95$, it was just enough for my trip and I didn't have to find a dealer. The website I bought from is www.mexicosimcard.com

On my last trip to Cancun, I bought a SIM online from Mexico SIM card and was quite satisfied with it.
|
I used Movistar for cell service there and it wasn't that bad.

Prepaid Cell in DF for a Short Trip?
I'm going to be in Mexico City for 6 days and wanted to be able to use a phone with a good bit of cellular data while I'm there. My cell service here in the states is Virgin Mobile USA, which is a cheap prepaid Sprint MVNO that has no international coverage (trust me when I say that they don't offer it at all and there's no way to swap SIMs or anything like that)--so that's out of the question.
Is it feasible to buy a prepaid phone in Mexico City for the time there? I did a little Google'ing but am confused about whether this is even possible, how much it'd cost, and whether it's something I'd be able to do with limited Spanish-language knowledge. |
Hi,
check this thread for some useful info and tips: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/mexic...ns-mexico.html |
I would highly recommend going with Telcel, since they have the best coverage, in the country about 95% of all Mexico. If you have gsm unlocked phone you can buy a SIM card for about 15 usd. You can buy it at a Telcel store or there are probably some resellers If you have any questions let me know.

I hate to cross-post, but the Travel Technology forum seems like a black hole for this particular subject, and I'm in need of a fairly quick response.
Edited to add: got it working. To avoid cross-posting, I'll delete the majority of this post and refer folks to the other thread linked above for more details. |
My resort had wifi coverage in most of the places (and 4/4 bars of mobile service...)
I have no experience with Telcel personally, so I won't comment. |

Prompt and personalised service. I ordered one TelCel and one Lusacel sim card as I wanted to do some testing while in the Riveria Maya over 2013/14 Christmas/New Year. Vincent emailed with recomendation that TelCel had the best reception and I may be unhappy with the Lusacel sim during my stay. After several emails, we agreed to change my order to two TelCel sims (as we several in our trip that wanted to stay in contact while off resort). Vincent dind't add any additional charge even though I actually 'upgraded' the minutes/data with the change. It may be a few dollars more expensive than purchasing directly from the carrier or reseller while in Mexico, but the comfort of having an activated sim in hand before you even land is well worth the few extra dollars. |
Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but do the SIM cards sold by mexicosimcard.com support Personal Hotspot on the iPhone/iPad by any chance? Didn't find anything on the site about it and I remember that AT&T, etc. used to block it in the past unless you bought an extra tethering plan.

In fact, in the couple dozen SIMs I've purchased overseas, I've never had Personal Hotspot not enabled. |

Can't speak to the ones sold by mexicosimcard.com, but my Telcel card purchased in Mexico City (from a random kiosk) offered it.

Cancun/Isla Mujeres
Stumbled in to this thread after searching for topics on swapping sim cards when I go to cancun and isla mujeres.
I hv an S4 and am thinking the same when I go to Isla in a few weeks. So my question is can you get a sim card in Cancun and where? Which phone co to choose? Sounds like Telcel is suggested here. Does google maps work on Isla? Thats mainly what I will use it for besides checking email. I have found google maps to be a great gps when I am travelling. Thanks |
You can buy and top up prepaid SIM cards (SIMs are called 'chip' in Mexico, 'prepago' is prepaid) at any of the ubiquitous OXXO convenience stores. I can't remember which ones they service - I had both Iusacell and Telcel (best coverage) in my dual-SIM card while living in Mexico City earlier this year. I think Movistar is the cheapest provider.

Thanks Since you mean Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo, Google maps does provide coverage, and there is an OXXO market there (best place to stock up on a all kinds of things. Enjoy! OXXO: Calle Avenida Hidalgo No Supermanzana 1, Manzana 20, near Abasolo, Isla Mujeres (don't try this address in Google Maps - use OXXO instead). |
Sorry for resurrecting an old thread, but I'm starting to wonder whether Telcel's website allows reloads with US cards at all. From what I've read online, "some" US cards supposedly work but every single card I've tried thus far (Chase, BMO/Diners Club, Capital One 360) and PayPal have resulted in the same error message telling me to contact my bank. It doesn't seem like it's actually going much farther than Telcel's servers either as I don't get the typical fraud alerts when something declines.
Thoughts? |
You can download Telcel Pay and use PayPal with it

Currently in Mexico. Out of curiosity, I tried to reload online through MiTelcel again. This time I went through a process where I had to put in the amount in pesos they charge (under $1) as some sort of verification step. You're only given two attempts before the reload is cancelled altogether.
Of course, even after being able to complete verification on one of my cards (which required some calculation due to US banks only showing USD amounts), it still failed to reload. Not to mention that I ended up getting a fraud alert and needing to call Chase for my other card. Oh well. |
Considering a Telcel prepaid 4GLTE SIM card for an US phone from Amazon for an upcoming trip to CDMX. Any thoughts/concerns? Are SIM cards readily available at MEX? Any other suggestions? Thanks!

Who is your US cellular provider? With some Verizon and AT&T plans roaming in Mexico is free.
