New Arrival Requirements for Foreign Visitors

On the Aeromexico website is a new pop-up notice for foreign visitors. Basically you have to show proof of departure (outbound ticket or transfer). Mostly all countries have this requirement but seldom enforce it.

So now they are enforcing it. Mexican residents (permanent or temporary are exempt).

Nothing really new, but I bet that the government is going to ding airlines that don't comply. I've been asked for proof of onward travel more than once, and from more than one country, even being called at the gate. I would expect this to occur on an increasing basis worldwide for reasons that are suitable for another FT forum.

Didn't I mention in my post that this is basically nothing new and other countries do it routinely? I've been to other countries that do it and even get it wrong. Because some countries like Nepal don't require proof of onward travel even though the Dubai International Airport thinks they do. I almost miss my flight dealing with those idiots. I posted this information for people coming to Mexico that probably never dealt with it before and figure Mexico was safe for a one-way ticket for example like it used to be or not even enforced. Seems like they're getting ready to enforce it.

Must not be in effect yet, I arrived MEX last night using US passport. La migra just smiled, scanned and stamped my passport and said bienvenidos.

No questions, no having to show return ticket. Maybe the return ticket is linked to the passport via APIS?

That's good to know. Thanks for reporting back.

Or the onus is on the airline, which will be fined if not verified, and likely has the APIS info on the screen.

This! The point of enforcement has always been at check-in in a foreign country for your flight to Mexico. The check-in agent sees that most visitors to Mexico have a return ticket. If not, there's where you'll be questioned, and you'll need to answer to their satisfaction how you intend to leave Mexico. If you can't, you won't be allowed on the flight.

That's always the way it's been in the past.

Not actually. In my case they always screw up that part when I leave the USA. They just ask me when will I return and I always give them a date 6 months in the future. I've told them I'm a permanent resident but they don't even care to listen or even accept my residency card. They still ask when I'm returning. 🙃 This is on Delta/Aeromexico.

That seems overly zealous if you're a permanent resident. But my point stands: The enforcement takes place at the airline check-in counter outside of Mexico, not upon arrival in Mexico. These people are interpreting it incorrectly.

That's where it happens to me, OUTSIDE of Mexico at the Airport when I'm checking in to fly to Mexico. If I didn't read your comment correctly, then disregard and I agree with you that the travel information is collected at the departing airport outside of Mexico, which it has always happened, at least for me.
