Online bill paying in Mexico
Traveling to Mexico next week. Need to pay bills online while there. Assuming better to use cell service with my vpn rather than hotel wifi? Any suggestions?
Thanks |
Can you pay the bills before leaving home?
|
No but thanks

It's 2025, so whatever biller's website you're using almost certainly uses strong encryption; it doesn't matter whose network you use to connect.
That said, some American sites do block foreign IPs for security reasons so a VPN would be useful to beat the geoblock if you run into it. |

LIke this user stated, some companies in the USA block transmissions that come from outside the USA regardless of which country you are in. I live in Mexico and pay all my bills online. I have a stand alone VPN module and a VPN app installed on my phone so no matter where I'm at in the world I can visit a host of websites. I suggest getting a VPN app temporarily if you're only traveling for a short time.

It also depends on the method of payment and the vendor - CC payments from the vendor website, payment of CCs or other bills from the vendor website, a push from the bank account to the vendor, etc. If at all possible, I'd be scheduling payments prior to travel if the site permits a later scheduled payment date.

My point was that many websites in the USA and otherwise will completely block you from accessing your accounts. You can't even get into the website to pay or anything else. The only option is to call in your payment. And what's really sad, many of them don't have a international number to call outside the USA. I recall calling Amica Insurance to get an international number to call. There wasn't one and the 800 number totally didn't work outside the USA. It may now, but that was some years ago. Best thing is to get VPN on your phone at least and call it a day. Flyertalk is one such website that blocks blocks blocks...😁

Yah, I know, yours wasn't the quote I should have posted. Meanwhile, this seems to work most places (long time since I've tried, so who knows now - of course, not free):

Instead of doing all that and listening to "Mr Dial Tone" it would be less stressful to just pay for a VPN 😂 Not worth my time. I've figured out over the years that time is money and I don't like wasting time.... because you never get it back.⏰

Replying to my posts may be considered grand waste of time #1. Next time, just send me money. I even accept MX$. :p

Normal business as usual
We are in Mexico for 3 months of the year. I pay everything online using a VPN from my home wifi. I would not hesitate to use the Vpn + hotel wifi.

Thanks for all your replies! I have been using a vpn for years but I guess I was still unsure. Will pay my bills when they are due as I cannot schedule them ahead of time.
Looking forward to warm weather as it now 4 outside and that is the temperature not the wind chill! |
