Oaxaca transportation
 

Went to CDMX earlier this year and was very impressed with Uber there, dependable with great prices. Disappointing it appears there is no Uber in Oaxaca. Does anyone have any experience with the Didi rider app in Oaxaca? Or other suggestions for transport in Oaxaca? Thanks

Don't rent a car. We did last year. It was broken into while we were in a restaurant. Fortunately, we had our computers, phones and passports with us, but we still lost quite a bit.

My memory is that we used taxis very affordably. The hotel called them for us and we were able to flag them down while in the downtown area.

I haven't heard of Didi. I'll be interested in what others say.

Where are you trying to go in Oaxaca? The central core of the city with all the tourist sites is extremely walkable. If you want to visit towns in the valleys nearby, the public transit system works extremely well, or you can always take guided tours for a reasonable price.

I spent over a week in Oaxaca city last year and only took a taxi to/from the airport. Everywhere in the city I wanted to go, I walked, and when I went to nearby towns I took buses or shared taxis.

Thank you for your information. Is there anything you recommend to not miss or particularly good guides or tours? We are going in early November a few days after the "Día de los Muertos" We are staying 11 nights.

Monte Alban Oaxaca Ruins are a do not miss. They are a short drive from Oaxaca and will take half a day.

There will be masses of decorations up from Dia de Los Muertos that will be fun to see.

We ate at a very special restaurant near the airport called Alfonsina. We had lunch there; it was a wonderful cultural experience. We had to book and I think the only way was to track down the chef's WhatsApp number.

Go to Monte Albán, absolutely. I'm sure you can pay someone for a tour, but there are a couple of tourism companies a few blocks south of the Zócalo that offer round-trip shuttles for a cheap fixed price (something like maybe 60-80 pesos, if I recall correctly). I would highly recommend a guided tour - if you speak Spanish, you might be able to find a guide at the site, or you can go with an organized gringo tour. In town, there are some very nice museums and churches to visit and lots of amazing food.

Mitla is another archeological site a couple of hours away by bus; it's well worth seeing. I stayed in the town of Mitla for a few nights and frankly found that kind of underwhelming - not a lot to do there. There's a massive market in the town of Tlacolula, which I highly recommend for people-watching and maybe buying souvenirs. The town of Teotitlán del Valle has lots of weaving workshops selling rugs - it's all much of a muchness, but there are a few nicer places and the town is pleasant enough for an afternoon.

All that said, I think 11 days in Oaxaca might be a lot - it's a beautiful city with lots to see, but I feel like you'll hit the main things in 4-5 days. The problem with Oaxaca's location is that it's not really conveniently located to other major tourist destinations - it's about 7 hours or so by road to the beach, and something like a 12-hour bus ride (:eek:) to San Cristóbal. You could always fly down to Puerto Escondido to do a few days on the beach if you want to mix things up a bit.

Regular cabs are cash only, I'm pretty sure. Even if not, I'd be wary of using my card for a cab there.

Art is big in Oaxaca. It is a center for black pottery and Alebrijes, colorful wood carvings. There are studios in the area. I went on a day tour of Monte Alban and visiting some of these studios. It was all in English and we were driven around in a minibus. Don't remember the price, but it was reasonable. Also did taxi to/from airport and I don't remember, which means nothing shady happened and the price was reasonable. I was lucky the the Oaxaca Symphony happened to have a concert while i was there. It was free. Definitely worth visiting, though 5-6 days is probably sufficient. I stayed a week and recall I could have cut it by a day or two.

In Oaxaca I have used Travel Oaxaca Premium company, owner is Jorge 52-951-117-4850. He did airport pickup and return + tours to all the above mentioned places + reasonable local restaurants during tours. He also made suggestions for other restaurants, coffee shops, markets etc that were walkable from our hotel. His English is very good. Transportation was in comfy clean air-conditioned vans.

Monte Alban is magical.

Each trip was 5-6 days including travel to/fro Puerto Vallarta thru Cuidad de México ..3-4 days of his tours then a couple days to self explore. I have always stayed near Centro/the main plaza.

I have used the didi app before in Oaxaca and I had trouble using my CC. I wasn't sure if it was the poor cell service or something else but there is also an option to pay cash to the driver. It works exactly like uber except if you pick the cash option you will pay the amount at the end of the ride. The amount is shown on your phone as well as the driver.

You will have such a wonderful time in Oaxaca - the food and culture there is very special. I was there in May and am going back in Sept.......

Thanks! At last some who has experience with the Didi App. I will give it a try as well. Who did you us for cell service? Hoping T-Mobile will work.

I have ATT which has free roaming down there but the cell signal in town was awful. I ended up picking up a Telcel sim last time and found the service a little better - perhaps t-mobile will roam on them since they are the roaming partner up here.

TMobile works fine throughout Mexico. Been using the service for over 5 years in Mexico. Just make sure your plan has North America roaming.
