Possible? Weekend Getaway No Entry Test: Clarification on 3 Day Rule
Hi All,
I have tried like hell for clarification on this.
With weekend getaways to Mexico or Caribbean, it is possible to test Friday, depart Saturday, and home Monday; without having to retest before entry.
The question is, does the 3 day testing rule apply as calendar days with the return, or does the return require you to pass Border Patrol before 72 hours from departure test?
Essentially I’m trying to determine when the departure Covid test expires for a return within 3 days - calendar or 72 hours from departure/return.
I’ve had a a handful of people ask me thinking I would know but this area seems to lack clarification and specifics.
Many Thanks.

Not sure what there is to clarify.
The CDC Order is crystal clear. It is no more than three calendar days prior to the departure to the US. Presuming that by "home" you mean the US and that your test complies with the CDC Order, you should have no issues.

Here's the quote from the CDC: "...get tested no more than 3 days before their flight departs and to present the negative result or documentation of having recovered from COVID-19 to the airline before boarding the flight." (emphasis added.)

There is nothing to interpret. The CDC Order has specified three calendar days since it was first issued. It remains in effect exactly as written.
72 hours does not appear anywhere. If you heard it from someone, they are simply wrong.
As the document is available online free of charge, it is the only thing I would rely on for planning.
