Teotihuacan & México Archaeological Sites during Covid, visitable?
 

I just got to Mexico City and really wanted to see teotihuacan but I’m told it’s closed. Anyone know how closed it is? Like can you still get close enough to see it? Worth going up there at all? I didn’t fully understand the concierge that told me it’s not open.

The "secured area" (i.e., parking lot, visitor's center, other ruins on way to the two large pyramids) is quite large. I'd skip it and go another time.

All archaeological sites in Mexico are currently closed with the exception of those in the states of Campeche and Guanajuato. The status of all archaeological sites in Mexico can be determined by visiting https://inah.gob.mx/zonas-arqueologicas.

I don’t think it would be driving out to San Juan Teotihuacan town to see the site from outside the boundaries, and there are closer WalMarts. (When they decided to approve building a WalMart on the periphery of the site, the locals were mostly unhappy.)

How about museums? Souyama and National museum of anthropology?

I went to their websites, they look open to me but I can't read Spanish.

The INAH (anthropology and history museum) museum has English pages. Link. I won’t attest to their accuracy; Covid or Covid restrictions aren’t even mentioned.

The Museo Souyama indicates it is open every day 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Entry is free. There’s no mention of Covid restrictions; I’d not be surprised in either case that there may be some variances to the norms. Note Souyama is privately owned by the Carlos Slim Foundation, making it one of the few museums, etc. open even on Mondays.

I just saw a video that the pyramids are open however it is limited to 3k people a day and you cannot climb them.

Gracias! Reopened a Thursday, September 10 to up to 3,000 daily. (Monday’s will undoubtably continue to be closed.)

Be aware there’s likely a deal giving preference to organized tours with certain companies. There may be a subcategory for independent travelers, but we don’t know much yet. But I’ve been left in the cold with air travel, bus or entry tickets, even when I had them in hand, that were not honored or required hours of delay because we were not part of a tour group that had connections, in Mexico, Guatemala, Egypt, etc.

Government of Yucatán announces official reopening of Chichen Itzá archaeological site

By Riviera Maya News on September 23, 2020Tinum, Yucatán — After being closed for six months due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the Chichen Itzá archaeological zone has officially reopened. The government of Yucatán made the announcement Tuesday, saying that the site has reopened to visitors with all hygiene measures in place.

In a press release, the Yucatán government reported that the Chichen Itzá archaeological site will be open daily from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. with the last access at 4:00 p.m. and with a maximum daily limit of 3,000 visitors.

I'm here on the ground in CDMX the anthropology and most other museums opened in the last week or two.

Teotiuacan is open too but you can't climb the pyramids right now.
