I spent a week in Mexico City and kept busy. There's a huge amount to do. There's also the archeological museum near the Zocalo. I visited several neighborhoods that featured a plaza with restaurants around the perimeter and of course shops. I very much enjoyed my time. And of course for Americans, it is an inexpensive destination.

Over in the Hilton forum I got a lot of "not safe neighborhood, Hilton Reforma is better" but I didn't find the former true, and I would have been paying cash for the latter because it wasn't a good deal on points (twice as expensive). I dropped by the Hilton Reforma while walking around and I could see why someone would prefer it, but not me at effectively double cost.

And yes, lots of genuine local eateries, history, reasonable walking distance to the Palace of Fine Arts. Would totally repeat a trip to Mexico City.

I'd suggest that the hotel advice for the Hampton Inn location is that "you can much more easily wander into a neighborhood that you don't want to be in (especially at night) from the Hampton location than from the Hilton location."

This was a small colonial town in the cool, forested mountains south of Cuernavaca that was a played out silver mining town. An American on horseback, an artist and architecture professor at Tulane University, fell in love with the town. He settled and began producing furniture and various arts and crafts pieces that became quite popular and hired four goldsmiths fron nearby lowland Iguala to e e Ute his jewelry designs.

His shop burgeoned into a village of smiths and designers, a number like him becoming recognized as world class artisans. His influence on Mexican jewelry continues today. (I learned silver design, manufacturing and repair in Taxco, learning from some who had worked for Don Guillermo (like the Castillo brothers), as he was known.)

Today, Taxco has retained its colonial appearance down to the buildings, required to meet certain specifications to maintain the colonial appearance, and cobbled streets. Though Taxco can be done as a long day trip, it’s a lovely place to spend a couple of days, with some delightful places to stay and eat.
I'm planning a 1 week trip into and out of MEX and was intrigued by this post. What's the best way to get from Mexico City to Cuernevaca and Taxco - bus? Was not planning on renting a car. I would want to stay a couple of days outside the big city.

By far the easiest way to get to Cuernavaca is by bus, and there’s another bus to Taxco. (In Taxco the bus depot is on the sinuous highway through town, as the narrow, cobblestoed streets are more suited to smaller vehicles - a taxi to your lodging will be easy and not too expensive.)

In CDMX, most buses for Cuernavaca, Taxco and Acapulco leave from the south side Terminal de Autobuses del Sur, adjacent to the Taxqueña metro station. The greatest frequency is maintained by Autos Pullman de Morelos. Nice comfortable speedy busses with as frequent as 10 minutes between busses, over 300 busses a day. MXN $280. Turistar runs MXN $360, Costa MXN $300.

In Cuernavaca, there are iirc three bus depots, Casino de la Selva on the east side of town and Centro. Estrella de Oro iirc is south near Las Palmas.

Link to mexperience guide to Cuernavaca.

To Taxco, one company is Estrella de Oro, but though it’s the most established company on the route it seems to have reduced frequency these days. Costa and Futura offer 11 trips daily. Current pricing is MXN $240 (about USD $12.60).

And when departing from Taxco, you can take the Estrella de Oro direct (stops briefly in Cuernavaca).

Link to mexperience Taxco page.

Expect the busses to be much better than most US busses.

You can make bookings online at https://www.reservamos.mx. I don’t know if they accept all credit cards. Uncheck the [] También buscar hospedaje box so it won’t flog lodgings at you.

It is only right that I come back here. Let me tell you I'm on my flight back and I can't wait to come back. There is SOOOO much to do. The city did not disappoint at all. You can do as much or as little as you want. With 23 million people I guess that's how it goes. I did a ton and feel like I barely scratched the surface. Felt safe the entire time. Used Uber, took the metro and the bus. Ate everywhere from street vendors to the #1 rated restaurant. I stayed at the JW Marriott in Polanco. That too was great. Service was awesome and lounge was great. Only thing is by the 3rd day I couldn't eat the breakfast eggs and bacon. Not sure why that was but just the smell of it was getting to me. Point is GO! Just GO! Ignore our state department. Enjoy.

Completely agree! WN customers should plan their trip soon as their MEX service permanently ends on 30 Mar.
