Venustiano Carranza is one of the 16 boroughs (delegaciones) of the Federal District; it serves Mexico City, and is located 3.1 miles / 5 km east of downtown (getting there takes significantly longer than you would think; traffic can be very congested). The airport is one of the oldest, opening in 1928, and is limited by two runways at high altitude (7,316 ft / 2,230 m above MSL) and can not expand due to encroaching population. Recent attempts to open a new, higher capacity airport were ended by the new President, so this airport, Latin America's second busiest, will do for now.

Interterminal Transportation - Aerotrén / Air Train: The landside elevated Aerotrén APM (Automated People Mover) claims to move only those connecting passengers with boarding passes between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. It consists of two to four cars, each with 25 passenger (with baggage and hand carry) capacity, per train, which travels at 28 MPH / 45 kph over the 1.9 mi / 3 km range. Time en route is 4:40 (min), dwell time in each terminal is 60 seconds, time between trains is 10:45 (min).
Aerotrén route
Interterminal Transportation - Landside red shuttle busses[/B] operate 05:00 (am) to 01:00 (am), also used during Aerotrén breakdowns, are labeled ""Transportación entre Terminales"; the stops are at entrance No. 6 of Terminal 1 and entrance No. 4 of Terminal 2. They are air conditioned, have luggage spaces and are wheelchair-accessible.

ARRIVING: If you are arriving from an international flight without a connection (you are terminating at MEX), you must have your forms filled out - see Requirements for visiting Mexico as a tourist ("tourist card", visa etc.).
You may have a lengthy walk down the glassed-in arrivals corridor. This corridor has glass door controlled areas to allow people from the departures area cross through the arrivals corridor (like using an air lock), so you could be detained by a boarding aircraft. In one instance we were detained nearly fifteen minutes enough route from the 30s gate as a TACA flight boarded and our passage was blocked by glass doors.
Proceed to the corridor end and down one floor to the not-so-well marked exits for "Migración" and proceed to the sometimes lengthy queues to present your passport and documents. Your tourist card will be stamped and you will be given a portion back - turn it in on your departure (if you lose it, expect to pay a fine and have to spend some time with formalities). (When you check in at MEX, the form will be stapled to your boarding pass, and removed at the boarding gate - if somehow you do not have it at counter or gate, you'll have to return landslide and fill out forms and pay a MXN 307.00 fine.
Once your passport is stamped and your "Tourist Card" / FMM is validated, proceed to the baggage carousels and look for your flight to be displayed. Carts are available. Retrieve your baggage and proceed to "ADUANA", where you will queue up one more time.Normally, as you approach the customs kiosk, you will walk up to what looks like a small traffic light / robot and press the large button; a Green light means you can proceed, a Red light means further Customs formalities and inspection. You normally then put your bags on a conveyor belt for x-ray screening, As your bags have been x-rayed prior to delivery you no longer have the x-rayed upon exiting the Aduana hall, though bags may be selected for secondary screening; then you are landside in the arrivals floor scrum.
BAGGAGE STORAGE (link)
If you recover your baggage and have a layover, there are left luggage / baggage storage / GUARDAEQUIPAJE* at AICM, ~100 MXN per day.

TERMINALS

By taxi: The authorized taxi stands at the airport have "Transporte Terrestre" kiosks where you can buy a ticket to your destination, and then proceed outside to the taxi line to catch the taxi. DO NOT pay attention to touts or walk across the street to pick up unaffiliated or pirate taxis - kidnapping and assault are not unknown if you choose to do this.

By Metro: If you have no luggage, you can use the Metro (Line 5 / Yellow Line, station Terminal Aérea) (serves Terminal 1 only - use interterminal shuttle bus to Terminal 2)and connect to your destination (most will connect to other lines at Pantitlán south, or Oceania north of Terminal Aérea). Tickets (and passes) can be purchased from kiosks, and cost $3.00 pesos per trip (~€ 0.15, or ~US$ 0.24). Hours are 05:00 a 24:00 weekdays, starting 06:00 Saturdays, and 07:00 Sundays and holidays. Local Bus: The best local bus is the articulated BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) Metrobús Line 4 - the electrically-powered red bus runs in priority roadway lanes from 04:30 (am) to midnight), departures every 20 minutes, takes 30 minutes to downtown historic center / centro histórico, costs $30.00 pesos (about US$2.40 / €1.80) single / one way, has luggage space. Catch it on the ground floor of Terminal 1 opposite Gates 6 - 7, and Terminal 2 near the taxi rank on the ground floor / arrivals. Be aware the airport is not located in the best area of the city, so it is not recommended for tourists to walk outside the airport terminal in search for cheaper taxi service unless you have pre-arranged your service. Definitely do not attempt this if you are not comfortable speaking Spanish. Despite this, an alternative Taxi Sitio (site) can be reached by using the overpass located outside of Gate D. Taxis here are about half the price of the official airport taxis and are considered secure. This is the Sitio (taxi rank) that is set up for the airline employees.

Most. But it is not customary for most int'l to int'l connections in the rest of the world. Mexico is another exception.
(The "most" is because although every US arrival has to go through immigration/customs, there are now some baggage exceptions, i.e., MIA, where your bags will transit without you having to claim them in the US.)

Domestic to international connection at MEX
Hi, I am wondering if it would be possible to arrive at 1:45PM on an AeroMexico flight from Zihuatenejo and make a 2:45pm American Airlines flight to the US, w no checked luggage. It's definitely cutting it close, but is it possible or a pretty bad idea to try? TIA

It likely won't be enough time. You'll arrive in T2, maybe at a remote stand. Then you'll have to make your way up to the tram, which is one vehicle that moves back and forth between T1 and T2 - you may need to wait for 15mins if you just miss it. Then make your way from the T1 stop to the security checkpoint (you need to have your AA paper boarding pass in hand, no mobile passes in MEX), clear security, and your flight may leave from the far T1 gates (29-36). It could work, if the stars align, but likely won't.
PS: if you're not a Mexican passport holder, you need to have your Tourist Card form ready to surrender at the boarding gate. If you lose it, you'll have to pay a fine/deal with immigration, and then for sure 1 hour won't be enough.

Items left at security checkpoint, T2
Long shot ask: I flew out of MEX yesterday afternoon, on my way back home to PDX. I flew out of T2. As I went through security with my carry-on, I was told by security they needed to check my bag. I had a jar of honey in there - not trying to conceal it; just didn't think about the liquids rule. Totally on me. So I told them they could keep the honey - I didn't want to check my bag - and they closed my bag and I was on my way.
It wasn't until I got home and started to unpack, at 11 PM, that I realized that when they closed my suitcase they left out a packing cube they had removed in their search for the honey. Inside the cube were a cashmere sweater and a couple of tops and miscellaneous clothes. I'm kind of heartbroken. I went online immediately to look at the web site for information about the possibility of claiming the items and having them returned to me, but it looks like they only handle in-person lost and found retrieval. As I am home, this is not possible.
I emailed them anyway to inquire about the situation, but don't expect the response, if any, to go in favor of having them mail the items back to me.
Does anyone know if they will mail the items home?
Alternately, is anyone here on FT heading to MEX and would be willing to retrieve my items at lost and found (assuming I can get confirmation that they are located,) and mail them back to me (at my expense, of course?)

IMO this is the single most frustrating part of departures from Mexico due to random and inconsistent procedures. IME the searches do not occur on every US-bound flight and when they do occur the selection of victims seems random. It is definitely is a disincentive to purchasing bottles from the duty free after you have cleared security, because they may potentially be confiscated at the gate. Also a reason I try to avoid being first in the boarding line though lately it seems like they are not focused on F passengers.

My bad, though it does not detract from the scenarios I have observed. I do not know what happens to duty free as I never buy any in Mexico - just assumed you take it with you from the store (as is the case in UK) but maybe not...
As for the honey, well, I think it is pretty well established that TSA or equivalent in most countries will prohibit liquids, gels, cough syrup, suntan lotion, whatever that are >100ml. If it isn't solid food don't bother.

I emailed them anyway to inquire about the situation, but don't expect the response, if any, to go in favor of having them mail the items back to me.
Does anyone know if they will mail the items home?
Alternately, is anyone here on FT heading to MEX and would be willing to retrieve my items at lost and found (assuming I can get confirmation that they are located,) and mail them back to me (at my expense, of course?)

The first challenge is that have they found your items yet and responded to you? I'll have a long layover at mex t2 in may, I don't mind retrieving them for you, but the 2nd challenge is that if they hold them for that long and if they allow me to claim your items. Maybe you have a better luck placing an ad in pdx Craigslist after you clear those 2 challenges.
I'm not optimistic.

How long to connect through MEX Mexico City?
I am on this beautiful new direct AS 3314 SAN to Mexico City flight Fr 2 Feb, but I forgot that I had not originated in Tijuana on Aeromexico (crossing the fabulous CBX bridge). I realized that I would not have enough time to connect to the Volaris flight to Huatulco at 2 pm, so I bought myself another ticket on Interjet at 16:25 instead to visit a beach festival in Zipolite.
Question: How long does it take to clear customs and immigration in Mexico City with no luggage (only small backpack), and connect to Interjet flights? AS 3314 is scheduled to land at 12:50 pm. In which terminal does AS 3314 arrive, and where does Interjet leave from to fly to Huatulco at 16:25? (I am also dragging along my 11-year-old son and 60+ husband, not making my running easier).
I used to enjoy just Terminal 2 with Aeromexico and receive my miles into my AS account, when I went alone.
Any experience, terminal info, advice on customs, security deeply appreciated!

MEX immigration+customs takes a long time. I have generally arrived in the AM from S.America or from LAX and both times it took 1hr+. There didn't seem to be any business/first priority line. Don't know how long it will be at 1p, though.
