Can anyone tell me which Marriott property is closest to the LRM Shanghai? I will be doing a MR with a co-worker that needs to burn some Marriott points. I am SPG Plat and will be staying at the LRM. I think it is the Marriott City Center but Google Maps is failing me on this one!

City Center is closest, but the Tomorrow Square locations aren't much further.

Stay Report in Nov 2011

Had a one-night stay here (stopover) in Shanghai and am fairly impressed

Pre-arrival
Got an email stating that as a platinum member, I can request their 24 hour check-in/check-out feature. I requested a late evening arrival and later evening departure and also added a request for Platinum upgrade. Within 24 hours, got a response from the front office manager stating that my request has been received and all is set, including the upgrade.

Arrival/Check-in
Arrived in a taxi to the hotel. There was some "hot shot" at the hotel, entrance driveway had policemen blocking entrance and the taxi was directed to drop me off on the side. Only a carryon, it was okay. Check-in was on the 11 floor. Upon check-in, welcomed me to the hotel. Stated that I was upgrade to a junior suite on the 27th floor. Inquired about a room on the "royal club" but was told only rooms, not "junior" suites were available. Also told that 27th floor is good because it has elevators accessing the room level, the lobby level, and the ground level. I was also given a listing of Royal Club benefits and escorted to the elevators and shown how to use them.

Accommodation
A triangular shaped junior suite with a sitting area, business desk, swivel tv, and a large bed. The decor is standard international asian hotel. The bathroom was very white and seemed "dated" with white marble (maybe it's just me). Standard LeMeridien Amenities. This room overlooked the Park across the street.

Within 5 minutes of arriving in the room, there was a fruit basket and snacks brought up to my room, and had a "turn-down" service on the bed.

Recreation
The gym and pool was on the 8th/9th floor. The pool was a "free-form" like pool that I can swim laps in. The gym had many machines and free weights and accessble 24 hours a day. In the locker rooms, there was a sauna, steam room, jacuzzi, and cold plunge pool.

Royal Club
On the 44th Floor, had nice views of the smog during the day. Had breakfast in the restaurant so cannot comment. The evening cocktails was nice with open bar, appetizers, and cold plates. Not the most amazing spread, but sufficient.

Breakfast in the Restaurant
A good selection of Western and Asian cuisine. There were different sections serving different cuisines including western (omelete bar, sausage, eggs, carving station, starches, etc.), cantonese (congee, pickled delicacies, dimsum), chinese (noodle bar, rice, chinese dishes), bakery bar (lots of selections), juice bar (freshly squeezed selections), japanese (sushi, tofu, etc.) fruit bar (large selection) and a salad bar (salad and cold plate items).
Service was excellent!

Location
On Metro Line 1, People's Square, and on one end of the walking street, there are a lot to do, eat, and shop in the area.

Overall
Service was overall excellent and most, if not all the personnel I had contact with, were sincerely helpful.

One thing to watch out for: the whole currency conversion thing. I specifically asked to charge my stay in RMB. The check-out agent also noted my selection. Yet when I signed the slip, it stated RMB and USD. The agent said I will be charged in RMB. Thinking like other Asian countries that I've been to, I circled the RMB amount and initialed it. Well, you guessed it, they charged me in USD, a total of a approx. 7 usd more than if I was charged in RMB (with my visa card, no foreign transaction fee). Not a big deal, but I wrote to the property and a manager apologized for the inconvenience and stated that if I wanted the transaction to be reprocessed, to let him know.

I stayed here twice during my latest trip to China. Service was top notch, and I was upgraded to a spacious Junior Suite on my first visit. I inquired about a Deluxe Suite, but was told that they were unavailable. A quick check online once I got to my room proved that to be true. A full breakfast is offered downstairs to plats, so I was advised by the receptionist to take the 500 point amenity. A plate of fruit and container of cookies were already in my room, along with a welcome letter from the manager. A solid, clean, quiet, room. No issues with Internet speeds.

The location of the hotel is perfect. Just a few minutes to the People’s Square metro station on Line 2, and at the end of Nanjing Lu street.

The executive lounge serves afternoon tea from 2:30pm-4:30pm, and starts serving over a dozen types of light finger foods and snacks from 5:30pm – 8pm. If you’re not terribly hungry, you can definitely make a meal of it. Soft drinks are available free all day.

The gym is one of the largest I’ve seen, with a huge complement of cardio and weight machines. There’s also a large pool available. My room’s heater was broken, and when I got back to my room later that day, it was fixed. The breakfast here is the best I’ve encountered in a hotel. I had previously rated Oscar's at the Conrad SIN as #1 on my list.

Junior suite is the standard upgrade for Plat, not Deluxe suite.

I have learned not to use Chinese at this properly when making a request to the front desk agents, they treated me like a second class citizen.

A day later with English everyone was eager to help.

William & Thyetus,

My friend just got an email from LRM Shanghai this morning. The reseveration has bee made few weeks ago.

.................................................. ....................
Dear XXXXX

We thank you for choosing Le Royal Meridien Shanghai for your upcoming travels to Shanghai. We would like to confirm receipt of your claim through our Best Rate Guarantee customer service center.

Unfortunately the channel you have booked through, Hoteltravel.com, experienced an internal system error and therefore did not display the correct guestroom rates for Le Royal Meridien as well as several other hotels. We immediately contacted this hotel search site and they have now assured us the problem has been resolved and rates are now correctly listed.

We have reviewed your claims and as a result of the problem caused by Hoteltravel.com we are not able to honor the rates found on the above mentioned website. As a courtesy for choosing our hotel, we would like to offer you a special discount of 20% off our hotel’s Best Available Rate for two (2) nights, out of the 5 nights you booked through Hoteltravel.com. The balance of your bookings will be changed to reflect our hotel’s current Best Available Rate of CNY1425 plus 15% service charge for the dates booked and will be eligible for SPG (Starwood Preferred Guest) points and benefits, whereas bookings via Hoteltravel.com are not. Please note the revised pricing of your bookings will be without penalty should you wish to make amendments or cancellations at a later date.

Hoteltravel.com has formally apologized for any inconvenience caused; we thank you for your support and look forward to your future visits.

Best regards

The BRG rate is 8XXnet CNY. So, does this means every property can just deny a valid BRG claim after a period of time? For your information, the average room rate for weekends in July is 1140cny+. So, he is getting a really special offer from LRM Shanghai??? Thank you.

This is not cool. I've seen some corporate rates at the LRM for as low as 900, though not during peak season. They should honor their words. If anyone is interested, I am now tight with the Westin's marketing people, and they actively want your business. While I prefer the LRM to the Westin (in terms of both location and amenities), I can almost guarantee very good service at the latter. PM/email me if you're interested.

As far as I was informed, the CS team in Singapore is handling this issue and will be following up with your friend on the claim.

As far as I know, that's another friend of mine who you are talking about. I do know few other people who also received these letters. However, they have different BRG rate. So, all these different rate are considered as error rates? My question is what rate is classified as a valid BRG rate?

Just my personal opinion here, but this sounds like an exceptional situation, so I would not expect every BRG claim to undergo the same process. Plus, it wasn't an error on the part of the property, so I don't see why they should be held accountable. Perhaps the third-party should step up and assume that responsibility in this case?

The entire point of the BRG is that you guys are obligated to honor it in all cases.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on that point. Besides this, the matter is now in the hands of Consumer Affairs, so there is no need for me to offer any further opinion.

1. I would advise these members(including your friend) to reply back to their individual email from the BRG department regarding this issue.
2. As investigation is being carried out, I would not be commenting any further on this.
