Legacy to New Travel Package Conversion (effective August 2018)
A Marriott supervisor can currently convert your legacy travel package into the new category mapping. If you hold a Category 6, 8, or Tier 1-3 legacy certificate, it's ideal to downgrade your certificate before converting so that points don't potentially get lost in the process.

When converting your legacy certificate to a new certificate your prior certificate is cancelled and your new certificate will (in most cases) have an expiration date that is 12 months from the date of issuance (today).

The codes for the New Category partial packages are:
5-night packages
  • OC5=530T/P530 is now NC4 QP53
  • OC6=570T/P570 is now NC4 QP53
  • OC7=610T/P610 is now NC5 QP61 (refund value: 45K)
  • OC8=650T/P650 is now NC5 QP?? (Refund value: 75k)
  • OC9=690T/P690 is now NC6 QP69
7-night packages
  • NC4 QP83 = OC5 830T/P830 (refund value: 45K)
  • NC4 QP87 = OC6 870T/P870 (refund value: 75K)
  • NC5 QP91 = OC7 910T/P910 (refund value: 105K)
  • NC5 QP95 = OC8 950T/P950 (refund value: 135K)
  • NC6 QP99 = OC9 990T/P990 (refund value: 165K)
  • NC6 QP99 = OC Tier 1-3 L830 (refund value: 195K)
  • NC7 QL87 = OC Tier 4-5 L870 (refund value: 315K)
Other 7-night packages
  • NC5 QP88 = OC7 P880 (refund value: 135K)
  • NC5 QP92 = OC8 P920 (refund value: 165K)
legend:
NCx = new certificate category
QPxx = post-merger converted partial package
OCx = old certificate category
QLxx = post-merger converted partial package (only QL known so far is QL87 for NC7)
xx0T = initial package;
Pxx0 = partial package;

MARRIOT UK: +44 20 7012 7312

For best practices on converting OC to NC, I’ve copied post # 1181 here. Thank you jameswes!

(Also, never use the word UPGRADE. You must say you want to CONVERT your certs.)

New data point for the new year.

I've read/followed the majority of this thread and now that I have a plan for how to use the travel certificates I made it happen

Last July, I purchased two OC1-5 travel packages. I have an upcoming trip that I wanted to use the certificates to book two rooms at an NC5 hotel.

1) Verified that I had an extra 120,000 MR points in my account (2x60,000 to upgrade from NC4 to NC5)
2) Call the UK Marriott # in the wiki (+44 20 7012 7312). In total, the call took about 25 minutes.
3) Explain that I have a booking I wanted to make, and I wanted to Cancel my two 830T certificates and convert them to two QP91 certificates. I did need to be clear with the rep that I was going to be using additional points from my account to upgrade the certificate.
Canceling two 830T (OC1-5) added 90,000 points (2x45000) to my account
Ordering two QP91 (NC5) subtracted 210,000 points (2x105K) from my account
4) The rep said that their "specialist" wasn't in the office, but she would leave detailed notes and have him do it the next day
5) True to form, the next day (today), I got an emails saying that my old certificates were canceled and new certificates were ordered.
Email clearly states that 830T certs were canceled
Second email clearly states that QP91 certs were ordered and 210K points were redeemed
Email (and account) state that the expiration is one year from today
As typical, App is up-to-date, website doesn't show the updated information yet.
IMPORTANT! Possible Points Advance Implications of March 5 category changes: There’s a (potential) issue with the category changes and Points Advance reservations. Marriott included the following information when they emailed some of us about the upcoming changes: “Points Advance — Members who wish to book a points advance redemption under the current Marriott Rewards and SPG award chart are encouraged to order redemption certificates before March 5 to lock in the rate. On March 5, redemption bookings are subject to the new unified program award chart.” We’ve reached out to Marriott to confirm the practical implications of this verbiage, as it sounds like Points Advance reservations will revert to the new pricing if they don’t have certificates attached prior to March 5. To be on the safe side, if your hotel is increasing in category be sure your TP certificate is attached to the reservation before March 5.

Concerning use of TP for peak or off-peak, see post 2179:

I asked to speak to a supervisor and he said no, that without account verification he couldn't transfer me. And he just hung up on me. I am so mad, we stayed at Hilton and had a good experience. After I use this certificate we won't be going back to Marriott.

I too was trying to upgrade our certificate because the hotel that I was going to use it cancelled my reservation, it's a new hotel that is delayed so it won't be completed in time for our trip but I didn't even get an email notifying me of the cancellation. I will be calling back this afternoon, hopefully I can get someone to help me out.
Welcome to FT, and sorry about your experience!

Advice kindly sought • Cancelling an old Tier 4-5 attached TP certificate

Firstly, many thanks for taking time out to read this -- I greatly appreciate it!

Would any FTers be able to advise me on the following? I currently have booked:

• 1 x 7-night stay at a Ritz-Carlton hotel in Japan: I have already attached a 7-night Tier 4-5 "Travel Package" certificate to this booking; for clarity, this certificate was acquired and attached pre-merger.

It now seems that I may have to cancel this booking and certificate. If I did have to cancel, would anyone possibly be able to confirm whether my figures below would hold true in terms of what Marriott would re-deposit into my account? :-

45,000 points plus the difference between old Cat 1-5 and old Tier 4-5, i.e. 45,000 + 270,000 (540,000 [Old Tier 4-5] - 270,000 [Old Cat 1-5]) = 320,000 ???

I may have got my math totally wrong here, I admit, and this may be wishful thinking on my part, too. I would be ever so grateful if anyone might be able to point me in the right direction in terms of how many points I stand to receive back for cancelling this certificate. (I presume, too, that I would be unable to amend dates/hotels instead of a full cancellation?)

Many thanks once again for reading this!

All the best

My understanding is that you should receive 315K in points (45K + 270K) if you cancel the certificate. The old tier 4-5 is the only certificate I would cancel for a return of points rather than try to find a use for it. With the 5th night free, 315K in points would get you 6 nights in any MPG hotel this year with 15K left over. Alternatively, you could spend 5 nights at different hotels and still have 15K to utilize elsewhere.

rny321 -- many thanks indeed for input above: it's greatly appreciated!

Well, that's very reassuring to hear and, as you say, the points that I would stand to receive back still would enable me to stay somewhere nice elsewhere for a few days.

Again, thank you for this. All the best.

Why don't you instead convert your Old Tier 4-5 certificate to a New Category 7 certificate and use it for a future stay?

EDIT: A 7-night New Category 7 would otherwise cost 360K (or 300K-420K after a few months) , so I guess I see the value in cancelling for a 315K refund instead, unless you do have a specific 7-night stay planned.

Would Marriott allow that? Probably, it's ignorance on my part, but I had thought, if attached to a booking already, my only option from there would be to cancel it as opposed to asking Marriott to convert the certificate into a different category in the new program? I wasn't aware at all that this might be an option. Again, this might just be my misreading of the situation.

Yes. Ask to have the existing certificate detached without cancelling the reservation. Once the certificate is detached it can be converted to a new certificate and the old reservation can be cancelled or changed. If the reservation is cancelled with the certificate attached, you certificate may be cancelled.

Throughout the conversation with the rep, keep repeating that you want to keep the certificate to use later on a different hotel. Restoring a certificate that was incorrectly cancelled can make most other MPG discussions seem quick and pleasant.

rny321 - thanks so much again for this. That's really enlightening and opens up a new option that I'd been totally oblivious of. Thanks, too, for the heads-up re Marriott CS. All the best.

@Scoob72 if you do convert your certificate to an NC7 please do come back an tell us the booking code.

The codes for the New Category partial packages are:
5-night packages
  • OC5=530T/P530 is now NC4 QP53
  • OC6=570T/P570 is now NC4 QP53
  • OC7=610T/P610 is now NC5 QP61 (refund value: 45K)
  • OC8=650T/P650 is now NC5 QP61
  • OC9=690T/P690 is now NC6 QP69
  • NC7 is ?????

This is a meaningful in our knowledge of the new certificates and indeed seems to be a category of certificate which Marriott agents are entirely unable to even see.

I'm confused - I thought you would get 45k + 6x30 (because your tier was 6 categories up from the basic cat 1-5 (https://thepointsguy.com/news/marrio...-certificates/) for a total of 45+180 =225 - where are people getting 45 + 270?
That said I would agree to convert to new cat 7 if there is a hotel in that category you want to stay at for 7 nights - way better value than the points!
But as the post below not so sure you can even get a new cat 7 since Marriott seems not to have released a code for it - you could call and ask but mostly the answers vary depending on who you talk to!

Yes, when you want to use them they will be converted to NC certificates before they are attached.

Hi,

I'd appreciate your knowledge and feedback on this. I have an OC5 due to expire next summer. I may not be able to use it by then for a number of reasons. What I would like to do though, is to extend the certificate so that I can use it in December 2019/January 2020. Is this possible? In the old program I would just have had to wait until January 2019 and ask for the cert to be extended by one year, but does this still work in the new program?

Thanks.

I would wait to convert the certificate until you have firm plans. When an OC is converted to a NC, it will normally extend the expiration until one year from the date of the change. I know there is at least one example where the rep kept the original expiration, but that appears to be an exception rather than common practice.
