Legacy to New Travel Package Conversion (effective August 2018)
A Marriott supervisor can currently convert your legacy travel package into the new category mapping. If you hold a Category 6, 8, or Tier 1-3 legacy certificate, it's ideal to downgrade your certificate before converting so that points don't potentially get lost in the process.

When converting your legacy certificate to a new certificate your prior certificate is cancelled and your new certificate will (in most cases) have an expiration date that is 12 months from the date of issuance (today).

The codes for the New Category partial packages are:
5-night packages
  • OC5=530T/P530 is now NC4 QP53
  • OC6=570T/P570 is now NC4 QP53
  • OC7=610T/P610 is now NC5 QP61 (refund value: 45K)
  • OC8=650T/P650 is now NC5 QP?? (Refund value: 75k)
  • OC9=690T/P690 is now NC6 QP69
7-night packages
  • NC4 QP83 = OC5 830T/P830 (refund value: 45K)
  • NC4 QP87 = OC6 870T/P870 (refund value: 75K)
  • NC5 QP91 = OC7 910T/P910 (refund value: 105K)
  • NC5 QP95 = OC8 950T/P950 (refund value: 135K)
  • NC6 QP99 = OC9 990T/P990 (refund value: 165K)
  • NC6 QP99 = OC Tier 1-3 L830 (refund value: 195K)
  • NC7 QL87 = OC Tier 4-5 L870 (refund value: 315K)
Other 7-night packages
  • NC5 QP88 = OC7 P880 (refund value: 135K)
  • NC5 QP92 = OC8 P920 (refund value: 165K)
legend:
NCx = new certificate category
QPxx = post-merger converted partial package
OCx = old certificate category
QLxx = post-merger converted partial package (only QL known so far is QL87 for NC7)
xx0T = initial package;
Pxx0 = partial package;

MARRIOT UK: +44 20 7012 7312

For best practices on converting OC to NC, I’ve copied post # 1181 here. Thank you jameswes!

(Also, never use the word UPGRADE. You must say you want to CONVERT your certs.)

New data point for the new year.

I've read/followed the majority of this thread and now that I have a plan for how to use the travel certificates I made it happen

Last July, I purchased two OC1-5 travel packages. I have an upcoming trip that I wanted to use the certificates to book two rooms at an NC5 hotel.

1) Verified that I had an extra 120,000 MR points in my account (2x60,000 to upgrade from NC4 to NC5)
2) Call the UK Marriott # in the wiki (+44 20 7012 7312). In total, the call took about 25 minutes.
3) Explain that I have a booking I wanted to make, and I wanted to Cancel my two 830T certificates and convert them to two QP91 certificates. I did need to be clear with the rep that I was going to be using additional points from my account to upgrade the certificate.
Canceling two 830T (OC1-5) added 90,000 points (2x45000) to my account
Ordering two QP91 (NC5) subtracted 210,000 points (2x105K) from my account
4) The rep said that their "specialist" wasn't in the office, but she would leave detailed notes and have him do it the next day
5) True to form, the next day (today), I got an emails saying that my old certificates were canceled and new certificates were ordered.
Email clearly states that 830T certs were canceled
Second email clearly states that QP91 certs were ordered and 210K points were redeemed
Email (and account) state that the expiration is one year from today
As typical, App is up-to-date, website doesn't show the updated information yet.
IMPORTANT! Possible Points Advance Implications of March 5 category changes: There’s a (potential) issue with the category changes and Points Advance reservations. Marriott included the following information when they emailed some of us about the upcoming changes: “Points Advance — Members who wish to book a points advance redemption under the current Marriott Rewards and SPG award chart are encouraged to order redemption certificates before March 5 to lock in the rate. On March 5, redemption bookings are subject to the new unified program award chart.” We’ve reached out to Marriott to confirm the practical implications of this verbiage, as it sounds like Points Advance reservations will revert to the new pricing if they don’t have certificates attached prior to March 5. To be on the safe side, if your hotel is increasing in category be sure your TP certificate is attached to the reservation before March 5.

Concerning use of TP for peak or off-peak, see post 2179:

Hi everyone, I wanted to share a data point since this thread and the previous TP thread have been so helpful! I purchased an old category 6 travel package in early August. I did not attach it because I want to stay at a Sheraton in Kaui'i in October 2019, and I couldn't book that hotel or that far out. This Sheraton moved to a new category 5 so I knew I wanted to upgrade my TP, and was willing to pay 30k to do it. So I finally called the UK number this morning and spoke to an amazing agent. I explained that I wanted to upgrade my old category 6 TP to a new category 5, and confirmed both codes. She put me on hold for about 10 minutes. She then came back from hold and told me it was done! She didn't mention paying any more points, so I was hesitant. But she read the new code (QP91) and gave me the new certificate number. I then got an email saying my old certificate was cancelled and another email confirming my new certificate! I logged into my account and see the new certificate! And it seems like she just credited me 30k points as a bonus to make it work! See attached screenshot from my account. I'm going to apply it to the Sheraton as soon as possible since I don't believe my good luck! My only sticking point is the expiration - I was hoping to travel in mid-October 2019 for my 5 year wedding anniversary. Do you think I should just travel in Sept or do you think I will be able to push out the expiration? Don't want to risk losing my certificate! Anything else I should be worried about?

The 30k MRPs credited to your account was correct. MR issued a statement last month that for anyone who purchased a Category 6, Category 8, or Tier 1-3 travel package prior to August 18, 2018 they could downgrade their travel package one category (based on the new values) and receive a credit of 30k MRPs for doing so. Good for you that your customer service representative automatically provided you what you should have received (without you specifically having to ask her for it). As far as whether you will be able to extend this travel package beyond the current expiration date, no one is sure. Prior to the merger, it was common to be able to obtain an extension (often simply by changing the location of the stay and/or upgrading or downgrading the travel package). Under the 'new' system, we're not sure if that will continue. There have been reports that now a one-time extension is possible. There have been other reports that downgrading a pre-August 18th travel package certificate (as you just did) may count as the one-time extension as your new expiration date should be one year from when you downgraded/upgraded your travel package.

I suggest waiting for a bit before trying to make any further adjustments to this travel package. Once you are within the reservation window for the property you wish to stay at (probably starting sometime in November), I would inquire about the possibility of attaching your accommodation certificate for this travel package to an October reservation (and see if they won't allow you to do that). Good luck.

People,

Please note that SPG properties currently can NOT be booked with the TP cert. Dont waste your time to call around or asking here - it.can.not.be.done because the SPG properties have NOT been migrated to the Marriott booking platform, therefore there is NO MEANS to attach the cert.

When and if, you can book SPG properties from your Marriott account WITHOUT being redirected to the SPG booking engine, then it is the time we can use the TP cert on SPG properties.

Until that migration happened, the only way to use the cert would be manually processed it - I dont believe Marriott would go this route given how hostile it has been towards the TP redemption.

For those of you are afraid your TP certs would expire, best way is to keep a tab on how people can attach / detach their NCs when their travel needs change. Each movement should generate a new cert, unless the CSR took it upon himself to backdate the reissued cert.

Marriott system can only book 11 months out so the later you could leave the cert alone until you actually need it, the better chance for you to be able to use it in 2019. Of course you would also need to be mindful of the adjustment of category next March, but that is another story.

You may want to read the image more carefully. Your math is wrong. The 30K is not a refund because 75K full refund is receivd.
Poster received a NO COST UPGRADE from NC4 to NC5 with the additional 30K credited.

The poster received BOTH the full refund of 75K and an additional positive adjustment, to ADD UP to105K TOTAL VALUE, so s/he can redeem an UPGRADED NC5.

For the 30K refund you understood, it would be a 75K back, and then a redemption of 45K NC4, leaving a 30K refund on the account.

Right now, it is an ADDED 30K to make the redemption of an NC5 at 105K without having to pay for it.

This is the 2nd DP reported that an UK rep has done some goodwill adjustment to allow a NO COST UPGRADE. We do not know if this particular rep misunderstood the policy or being exceedingly generous, because someone has asked for the same treatment 2 days ago but was quickly shot down on - his rep told him he had to pay 30K to upgrade. He opted to downgrade and received 30K refund instead.

Come to think about it, both DPs may come from the same rep who either misunderstood the refund policy / procedure, or just did it as a goodwill. In other words, this is a pure chancy happening that could not be duplicate, Great for the 2 posters who have gotten it but we should not expect this is the policy.

One more story to tell about the UK call center, this one not positive.

I currently have a new category 5 cert in my account, I decided to try my luck and be the first to ask to upgrade the new cert. The last UK rep I talked to told me this would be no issue and actually encouraged me to call back to do this anytime I wanted, so I wanted to put her words to the test.

Called the UK number, got a rep pretty quickly, asked her to do an upgrade from NC5 to NC6 for 60K points. She was the agreeable type and immediately said no problem. Her understanding of the packages seemed to be limited which should have been my first red flag, but I carried on. After confirming several times what she was going to do, she put me on hold to get it done.

30 minutes went by, and she came back and said she was having trouble and the system was blocking her from doing anything, and it would be best for me to call back another time. I refused to hang up and immediately checked my account, and saw that she had cancelled my cert, netting me the points refund, which is not what I wanted. At this point I was getting nervous and asked her to simply restore my account back to the way it was. Another 30 minutes on hold, and she came back and said she was sorry but there was nothing she could do. My cert was gone. I immediately asked to be transferred to a supervisor, and all she did was transfer me to the US rewards line (had to start all over with the annoying announcements). An hour later, I got a great US rep on the line who immediately reordered my cert and got me back to square one. Whew. 3 hours wasted but I didn’t lose anything.

I’m not really sure what to take from all this, but at this point, I would be very careful about asking for the new carts to be cancelled and reordered. Hopefully some other brave souls can try it out and get some positive data points. It really is agent roulette at this point.

I did ask the US agent if she would have allowed me to upgrade the cert if I had asked, and she said no, she wouldn’t have touched it. She only reissued it because it was obvious that the other agent screwed up based on my account history.

I believe no one on the thread yet has been able to confirm the existence of an NC7 package (even if your package is a 5 night pkg), so this is a big data point if you did upgrade to NC7. From which category did you upgrade for 60k points?
Sorry I can see how it could be read like that. I meant I upgraded a OC 1-5 to a NC 5 (from it's default mapping to 1-4). I didn't want to push my luck so didn't even ask about a NC 7.

I have posted yesterday or day before yesterday, when I called the 353 number, hoping to move points from SPG account to the Marriott account so to "pay for" a 5th night free booking currently held on Point Advance.

The rep could not do it after went to research for quite some time. At the chit chat towards the end of the call (I generally do a little chitchat to find out where the rep is located, thank them for their assistance etc), the rep told me she was based in San Antonio, TX.... So beware, you may not always get the Real UK-based reps. Seems the chance of getting a UK-based rep was much bigger up till Monday - when now the 353 number has a general reservation message with the 44 number remains the usual Marriott Reward spiel.

If you call 353, make sure you pick the option 1 for reservations on UK properties, and hope you would get the genuine UK center.

What a brilliant result, nice one! I was surprised to just be allowed to pay 30k to upgrade mine, at least it means it's now usable! I was told with certainty it would be 20th Sept (ie tomorrow) that SPG property booking would be available so will be calling back. Have now got a reward reservation in my SPG a/c for a Marriott property so at least have a fall-back they should be able to attached the NC5 cert to if SPG not possible. Am going to be complaining in due course about the massive amount of hassle this has all been though.

Help with possible cancellation of certificate

Before August 18th I booked a Category 8 hotel with my Southwest Category 5 travel package certificate adding an additional 90,000 points from my account. This certificate expires January of 2019. Our plans may change and I am thinking of cancelling this reservation.

Will I get the 90,000 points back and my Category 5 certificate? (This is what I would like to happen)
If so, will the certificate have the same expiration date of January 2019 or will it be extended? It was already extended once.
Can I add points to change the category 5 certificate again?

Thanks for any help... I've read through everything but not sure I understand how this works since the change.

hey happy, FYI the points transfer from my SPG to Marriott accounts showed up in my account under “points sharing” a couple days after the fact. So it appears my rep used this mechanism to transfer the points between accounts. I assume this is the exact same process they use to transfer from member to member. Perhaps you can ask them to try this out.

I was just able to upgrade my NC4 QP83 certificate to an NC5 QP91 through the US/Canada Platinum rewards line, for the cost of 60K points.

Process was:
  • Me: Hi can you see the list of my certificates ?
  • Agent: Yes I see you have two category 5 and one category 1-4 certificates, how can I help you ?
  • Me: Can you exchange the cat 1-4 QP83 cert to a cat 5 QP91 cert ?
  • Agent: That would cost extra points, let me double check... That would require 60K additional points.
  • Me: Alright, let's do the exchange please.
  • Agent: Sure. Please bear with me while I'm processing the certificate.
  • Agent: There you go Sir, it's been done for you.
  • Me: Thanks, BYE !

Thanks for the update! That makes sense. No longer need it though.

The Combine Account process now is largely glitch-free, provided the entries in your 2 accounts are correct before the process.

Last night I experimented with my husband's accounts as his had only 7 SPG pts left - it went smoothly and his 7 turned to 21 SPG pts showed on the 2nd step of the process, (first step is for you to give your SPG credential, second step is giving you the point balance of each account, third step tells you how long it takes for various items to transfer, fourth step is to confirm the intention to combine, then it is DONE).

Today about 30 min ago I initiated the Combine Account on mine. It went exactly as last night. Once it is DONE, Marriott point balance reflects the addition of the SPG bal. Activities would take 48 to 72 hours to show up.

So if both your accounts are correct now, you can / should combine them. I would recommend to keep the Marriott account because it is the "native" platform - far less glitch-prone.

Of course I did take screen shots of both accounts balances and activities, as well as each step of the process, just in case. I think I would only keep the screen shots of the original account activities, esp the SPG one. The rest can be discarded.

One thing of improvement is, Marriott site now has options to choose whether you want to use point advance or not, EVEN THOUGH you already have enough pts in the account for the redemption. IIRC in the past if you have over 1/3 of the needed pts, the site would try to take all of it, and left the reservation with an unpaid balance. Now it let you choose.

Also if a reward night reservation is not paid for yet, it would not send out a confirmation email on the reservation. This can be a good or bad thing (some people may forget they have an existing reservation out there, and forget to cancel it in time.)
