Legacy to New Travel Package Conversion (effective August 2018)
A Marriott supervisor can currently convert your legacy travel package into the new category mapping. If you hold a Category 6, 8, or Tier 1-3 legacy certificate, it's ideal to downgrade your certificate before converting so that points don't potentially get lost in the process.

When converting your legacy certificate to a new certificate your prior certificate is cancelled and your new certificate will (in most cases) have an expiration date that is 12 months from the date of issuance (today).

The codes for the New Category partial packages are:
5-night packages
  • OC5=530T/P530 is now NC4 QP53
  • OC6=570T/P570 is now NC4 QP53
  • OC7=610T/P610 is now NC5 QP61 (refund value: 45K)
  • OC8=650T/P650 is now NC5 QP?? (Refund value: 75k)
  • OC9=690T/P690 is now NC6 QP69
7-night packages
  • NC4 QP83 = OC5 830T/P830 (refund value: 45K)
  • NC4 QP87 = OC6 870T/P870 (refund value: 75K)
  • NC5 QP91 = OC7 910T/P910 (refund value: 105K)
  • NC5 QP95 = OC8 950T/P950 (refund value: 135K)
  • NC6 QP99 = OC9 990T/P990 (refund value: 165K)
  • NC6 QP99 = OC Tier 1-3 L830 (refund value: 195K)
  • NC7 QL87 = OC Tier 4-5 L870 (refund value: 315K)
Other 7-night packages
  • NC5 QP88 = OC7 P880 (refund value: 135K)
  • NC5 QP92 = OC8 P920 (refund value: 165K)
legend:
NCx = new certificate category
QPxx = post-merger converted partial package
OCx = old certificate category
QLxx = post-merger converted partial package (only QL known so far is QL87 for NC7)
xx0T = initial package;
Pxx0 = partial package;

For best practices on converting OC to NC, Ive copied post # 1181 here. Thank you jameswes!

(Also, never use the word UPGRADE. You must say you want to CONVERT your certs.)

New data point for the new year.

I've read/followed the majority of this thread and now that I have a plan for how to use the travel certificates I made it happen

Last July, I purchased two OC1-5 travel packages. I have an upcoming trip that I wanted to use the certificates to book two rooms at an NC5 hotel.

1) Verified that I had an extra 120,000 MR points in my account (2x60,000 to upgrade from NC4 to NC5)
2) Call the UK Marriott # in the wiki (+44 20 7012 7312). In total, the call took about 25 minutes.
3) Explain that I have a booking I wanted to make, and I wanted to Cancel my two 830T certificates and convert them to two QP91 certificates. I did need to be clear with the rep that I was going to be using additional points from my account to upgrade the certificate.
Canceling two 830T (OC1-5) added 90,000 points (2x45000) to my account
Ordering two QP91 (NC5) subtracted 210,000 points (2x105K) from my account
4) The rep said that their "specialist" wasn't in the office, but she would leave detailed notes and have him do it the next day
5) True to form, the next day (today), I got an emails saying that my old certificates were canceled and new certificates were ordered.
Email clearly states that 830T certs were canceled
Second email clearly states that QP91 certs were ordered and 210K points were redeemed
Email (and account) state that the expiration is one year from today
As typical, App is up-to-date, website doesn't show the updated information yet.
IMPORTANT! Possible Points Advance Implications of March 5 category changes: Theres a (potential) issue with the category changes and Points Advance reservations. Marriott included the following information when they emailed some of us about the upcoming changes: Points Advance Members who wish to book a points advance redemption under the current Marriott Rewards and SPG award chart are encouraged to order redemption certificates before March 5 to lock in the rate. On March 5, redemption bookings are subject to the new unified program award chart. Weve reached out to Marriott to confirm the practical implications of this verbiage, as it sounds like Points Advance reservations will revert to the new pricing if they dont have certificates attached prior to March 5. To be on the safe side, if your hotel is increasing in category be sure your TP certificate is attached to the reservation before March 5.

Concerning use of TP for peak or off-peak, see post 2179:

No outright extension but once it is converted, any movement seems to give it a new life if the employee just let the system do its own thing.

Correct.

Based on the above, I believe the new TP does not have the refundable partial portion on the hotel stay.
Though I believe there would be very few redemption on the new TP as it does not make any sense for the hotel part - you actually would pay MORE then you book a straight point stay according to some calculations posted here and elsewhere on the net with break down analysis on the TP costs.

In other words, going forward, if one wants miles, do the 60K transfer with 25K miles would be better value than using a TP. Though Marriott system is having trouble to convert 60K into 20K airline miles, it seems the 60K would come up as 19994 miles instead of 20000 miles.
This really SUCKS! Unbelievable that Marriott makes this whole Travel Package thing so difficult to use and refuse to give back any refunds.

DP. I called Marriott to convert my old 1-5 cert to a new 1-4 cert, but the hotel I want to book is a cat 5 so wanted to upgrade it to 1-5 for the 70k extra points. They put me on hold and said it was done. But when I went back into my Marriott account I saw they converted it to a cat 6 instead and changed me 165k. So I called back and said I needed a 5. After another long hold she came back and said she had to be sure of the rules because it's complicated but was told she is only supposed to do it if it's being applied to an existing reservation. I said "I am ready to make the reservation, can we do it now?" She said yes and that is what we did. My points totals are still screwed up but she says it will take a day for the credits to come back in. So fingers crossed. Barcelona here we come!

Can someone clarify how many points it should cost to upgrade from an old cat 1-5 to a new category 5? Should it be 105k-45k=60k? So far they have charged me 135k points and given no credit for 45k. Which both seem totally wrong. Thanks!
  • NC4 QP83 = OC5 830T/P830 (refund value: 45K)
  • NC4 QP87 = OC6 870T/P870 (refund value: 75K)
  • NC5 QP91 = OC7 910T/P910 (refund value: 105K)
  • NC5 QP95 = OC8 950T/P950 (refund value: 135K)

Yes, it should be 60k. They should have cancelled your old cert which would give you 45k and they should have ordered you a QP91 for 105k points. It sounds like they botched the new cert order and ordered you a QP88 (NC5/135k) instead of QP91 (NC5/105k). This happened to me. What is the reward code of your new cert (in your confirmation email). It was painful to get it fixed but it is fixable. They may try to deny responsibility to fix it but if you hold your ground and point out that it was THEIR mistake not yours you should be able to get it fixed.

ETA: And based on reports here it may be easier to get this done by calling the UK line during UK business hours. Many US agents either do not know how to do this or claim it is not allowed. US agents can do it but many have experienced more helpfulness from the UK agents.

Shouldn't it be only 60k points to upgrade from old 1-5 to new 5? Sorry ignore, didn't see you post that question later on.

Yes, it says QP88. And the one that was canceled says zero points, no 45k credit. Would I call the UK reservation line, or is there a UK Platinum line or Travel Packages line? Thanks!

Tried to search previous posts and did not seem to find an answer, so trying to ask here:
did anyone successfully redeem the new cert (after conversion)? It was supposed to be on 9/18. But after several calls it seems they are still not ready and no ETA

No need for Plat line or anything, just the call centers in UK (actually based in Ireland). The numbers are posted several times in this thread. You just need to read back.

Read back. Of course many have done the redemption, if you mean the old cert converted to new cert and then attach to a hotel reservation, long before Sept 18th. At least a doz or more such "redemption" have been posted.

If you mean to redeem New Travel Package on the new chart., then I dont believe anyone here has done it, or has any intention to do it because it is a very poor value proposition.

By now there are more than enough of many different types of DPs and the suggestions on how to accomplish what the most sought after solutions. Not too hard to read thru the thread with some care. Should find the answers to most questions incl those posted the past few days.

I diligently read the thread and thought I had it worked out at one point, but I'm confused again. If I have an OC6 and want a NC4, PLUS my 30,000 point refund - do I ask for a QP83 or a QP87? It's not clear to me from the Wiki.

Marriott properties - yes. Not seen anyone report success with ex-SPG properties yet.

I am sorry if this is annoying but after reading through I cannot ascertain what my actual options are. I have an OC7, so what options do I have? Call up and get my points back for being caught mid Cat or ring up and upgrade? My preference is to upgrade but if it cannot be done, I will take the points and be done with it as this is all just a massive pain.

Thanks in advance for any help!

You are not mid Cat.
See the Wiki, OC7 maps to NC5. There are tons of decent hotels in NC5, but if you want something more - call the UK # and follow the upgrade steps described several times earlier in this thread. I think MasterGeek was the first to post how to do it.
