There has to be a cut off date. If Amex grants you an exception then everyone with a 5-day difference wants an exception and then everyone with a 6-day difference wants an exception and then . . .

Some people on this thread are acting like they missed the cutoff date for early retirement by two days. Gosh people, we're talking about less than $100 here.

Since it is now August 1 and Amex has indicated everything beginning August 1 will just be "points" and not SPG points, I must assume your 20,000 is just points and equal to 6,666 Starpoints.

Called today about my SPG Biz card and no offers on the account with about $10k in spending in the past year. I complained about the loss of the Sheraton Club lounge as well as missing out on the anniversary night by only 2 weeks. Got nothing. I'll keep the card since I'm still being billed only $65, but I'm only going to use it for Amex offers and Marriott stays. I told the rep the changes will cause me to basically stop using the card outside of Marriott spend.

Been a SPG personal card holder since ‘99 so long history so would suck to cancel it.

My AF posted a couple weeks so missed the annual night. Called last weekend and got offered nothing and the rep called my bluff to go cancel and said I think about it. Called again during the week. At first try to convince me of all the “great” new benefits but able to counter.

She asked if I would still like to cancel now that I know about the benefits (maybe part of their script?). So just told her I wanted a retentiontion offer and that I heard other members were offered them.

She first offered $75 for $2k in 3mo spend, I then asked if she can give me points and then offered 20k for $2k for 3mo.

So accepted since before got zero offer.

If you get denied try again seems maybe during the week and daytime you have more experienced reps that can “make things happen”.

Good luck!

My spend is embarrassing I think I only have a google drive $3.99/mo charge going through it! Lol!!!

After meeting the challenge putting in the sock drawer and keeping it for the annual night plus it’s my oldest card history.

Called to cancel with zero intention of keeping the card. Was put on hold for a while, and they came back with an offer of "[20k Starwood points after $2k spend in 3 months which actually converts to 40k Marriott points]." I asked to make sure she was talking about actual Starwood points and not Marriott points, and she said yes. With my anniversary coming up in very late August, I knew that I should be getting my free night (I hope), and this was enough to put me over the edge. I'm still quite certain that it's going to be Marriott points considering she didn't know about the real conversion rate.

Regardless of you asking the agent for clarification, I'm going to bet you are going to receive 20,000 Marriott points.

I say that for three reasons:
  1. 20,000 SPG points do not convert to 40,000 Marriott points. They convert to 60,000 Marriott points.
  2. Most retention offers I've seen are 7,500 SPG points.
  3. Amex quit awarding SPG points August 1.
So, instead of the equivalent of 20,000 SPG points I bet you will receive 20,000 Marriott points (the equivalent of 6,667 SPG points).

AF posted on 8/11, called retention line on 8/12 (after not getting anything from customer service line at the back of the card). Was told will be one of the first ones to enjoy the free night. Asked about retention bonus. Was offered 1) $100 credit after spending $2500 in 3 months, or 2) 30,000 new points after spending $3,000 in 3 months. Accepted the statement credit.

In hindsight, should have accepted the points, which should be at least double the value of the $100 credit. Oh well. Still means I got the card for free, including the free night.

can the personal SPG card be PC'd into any no fee card? I have had it for a long time but if no retention is offered I'll be hard pressed to keep the card and pay the AF, since I plan on keeping both Citi Prestige and CSR. It is one of my oldest cards and would love to keep the history,if possible!

No, Amex changed the rules in 2017. You used to be able to product change from one co-branded card to another co-branded card, so you could PC the SPG Amex to a Hilton Amex with no annual fee. In 2017 they changed that, and now you can only product change within the particular co-brand (e.g. SPG Amexes). Since Amex does not offer an SPG credit card without AF, you can't PC to a product without annual fee.

I say that for three reasons:
  1. 20,000 SPG points do not convert to 40,000 Marriott points. They convert to 60,000 Marriott points.
  2. Most retention offers I've seen are 7,500 SPG points.

I received same offer, and the clueless agent had no idea between difference of 20K M or SPG points, after stating that it is the same thing, I asked her to verify and then she read offer that stated as Marriott points.

$95 for an annual certificate, plus retention offer and multiple Sync credits (Including for multiple AU) makes this card a money maker.

That's too bad. So the current offer is less than what was being offered a month or so ago.

I agree on money maker. We have paid for our AF multiple times each year just by using the Amex offers associated with the card.

SPG Personal, lots of spend and never asked for retention bonus before. After some review and no lobbying by me, was offered 30k "new" points for $5k spend in 3 months.

Called multiple times to do a PC on my SPG Personal I've had since 2011 to ANY card, including Everyday no-fee or platinum card. Told each time you can't go between family of cards and I have the lowest option in the SPG family. Only options are to close account and loose the credit history, or continue paying the AF and hope in the future they release a no-fee spg product.

Fast forward to retention and was offered $100 credit after $2,500.00 spend in 90 days, or 30,000 Starpoints after $3,000.00 spend in 90 days. Called back to confirm with a regular agent and another retention representative that it was Starpoints that will convert in to 90,000 marriott points and each confirmed the wording I accepted. Great deal if it goes through as such. We shall see!

I put $30k - $50K spend each year on this card but really want to PC to a no-fee once the option exists again. For now this offer is fine combined with a night free. Hope that helps.
