Getting from Manhattan to NJ
 

I will be spending some time near 160th in Manhattan. There are some Marriotts across the I-95 bridge in New Jersey that I was considering for the stay. I will only be at the hotel to sleep. Someone told me that while I might get a cab to the hotel in the evening, I would have difficulty finding a cab to take me back to Manhattan in the morning. This would be Friday through Monday. Does anyone have experience to confirm or deny this or does anyone have better suggestions for where to stay. The Jersey locations are appealing because they less money than equally close Manhattan locations.

For what you might save on room charges, you will burn in taxi fares and tolls, as well as you own time.

I have never taken a cab from Manhattan to Jersey, but have often used them to go out to Long Island. Once the driver crosses the Queens/Nassau line, he makes note of the fare on the meter, and beyond that point any additional fare to your destination is doubled. This is permitted since he can't pick up a return fare in Nassau or Suffolk.

I believe the same rules will hold for travel into NYC, other than perhaps to/from EWR, where different rules might apply.

Once a NYC cab goes to NJ, they have crossed a state line and the fares become way expensive. You also have to pay tolls. I would forget using taxi's as a means of commuting to/from NJ.

If you want to stay in NJ and commute, I would suggest the Courtyard in Jersey City, where you can get a PATH train nearby. Also, the Courtyard in Lyndhurst or the Renaissance Meadowlands (across the streee from each other) has frequent NJ Transist buses for about $3.00 each way that go to the Port Authority terminal. From any of those, you could easlily transfer to local NYC transit to your final destination.

Added: I just noticed that your dates are Friday-Monday. I would try to score some kind of weekend deal in the city (AAA rates are generally good).

There is bus service (dirt cheap) across the bridge all the time. The real question is how far you'll be staying from the bridge.

We are going to be in NY for a week. The points to stay at the Courtyard at the Path station in NJ was 90,000 less than staying in the city. So we will get on the Path every morning. Also, this is leisure, not business, so schedules aren't as tight.

My daughter lives at 157th and Broadway. Spending time with her. Thanks for the replys - that helps.

if you stay at the courtyard in Jersey City, it will take you about an hour to get to 157th and broadway. And it will only cost $3.75 each way. See below.

Another option is to take the Path into the city then hop a cab up to 157th which will be much cheaper than taking a cab from NJ to NYC. that will run you at least $40 usually.

There are also very beautiful views of NYC from Jersey City and Hoboken and tons of restaurants and such. Plus you dont have to worry about traffic heading into and out of the city.

And keep in mind that the Courtyard JC is about 50 feet from the PATH station, with 24hr service in and out of Manhattan.

Another suggestion: the Teaneck, NJ Marriott is a quick bus ride (on the NJ Transit 182 bus) to the little-known Bus Terminal at 178th and Broadway (this is not the main NYC bus terminal which is at 41st st). From there, you can walk or take the M5L bus to 159th & Broadway. Traffic time total is likely less than an hour.

Don't forget the ferry ride not too far from CY NJ across the river. I took it to the trade show place (can't remember the place) and was quicker then subway+path.

Yes, but the ferries take you just to the river's edge (obviously). There are no subway lines there. Not too convenient to transfer. The easiest is probably the ferries to the World Financial Center downtown, but that's a very long way from 157th Street.

I would also second this location and would also recommned either the terminal mentioned above or even Port Authority.
