Marriott Suite is sweet

So I am in the Baltimore Waterfront Marriott for one night. I ended up with a suite that has to be almost 2000 sq ft!! A minimum of 1500, depending on how you count the bathrooms (yes, there is an s at the end of that) and the closets (again, an s), and the workout area in which there is an elliptical trainer. I don't know that I've ever had a room like this with Marriott.

Part of me is thinking it is because I'm here for only one night (and I'm a platinum), but the other part of me is wondering how they decide who gets these rooms? I mean, for tonight, seriously, what do I care? It's just me. I've got some room time, some bar time, and some client time at a restaurant. How can I figure out if this is the room I would get if I were staying for longer than just one night?

Anyway. Mostly just rambling here. I have a great room. And I must say, for the guy who is spending some nights at Starwood properties now, the consistency of quality among Marriott properties is a definite plus to the program!!

A suite is almost always sweet ^:)

i find most of my suites with MR are for my one nighters; I will say that there is one property that is the exception to the rule but I won't post it since that will probably be overachieving and Ill get someone in trouble

Me, too; that or weekends. I suspect they don't want to tie up a suite for days in advance since it would interfere with renting it out in the next day or two, while if you check in late they're pretty sure it is unlikely to be rented that night and thus "making your day" isn't going to cost them lost revenue.

I got a suite last year in (of all places) a Fairfield Inn in Greensburg, IN. It was my first stay there and it was for a week.

It certainly wasn't as opulent as the OP's suite, but separate bedroom, bathroom, living room and so on sure makes it nice to relax at night.

I was there a lot, and they would put me up in the suite from time to time. Always for the whole week, and it was the only one they had.

My last "Suite" experience was at the Marriott on Canal Street in New Orleans. They didn't have my room ready when I arrived so they upgraded me to a suite. It was a convention suite with a 8 seat table, two large flat panel TV's and plenty of room. The downfall was the Murphy bed. I was there to get a good nights rest, and the Murphy bed was just not working. I ended up changing rooms, but I thanked them very much for the thought.

Happy Travels!

The concierge lounge there used to be exceptional. Open 7 days. Huge spreads morning and night. All drinks, alcoholic and non, were complimentary.

Wonder what it's like now?

I was in that one! I think only the 2nd hotel I've ever stayed at with a Murphy bed (the other one was also a suite). It's been a few years so I can't remember if I switched or it was just a limited time I was going to be in the Murphy bed room at the Nola Marriott. For some reason, a really small room comes to mind, but I used to go to Nola a lot & that might have been a dif stay for the closet-sized room.

It's rare to get suites, but I find it's either for single nights or weekend stays.

Cheers.

Interesting. I guess this is really YMMV since I thought SPG is the only program that doesn't exclude Suite upgrades

SkiAdcock Feb 27, 2009 11:33 am

Marriott specifically excludes them, but occasionally a property will make it available, the guessing so far being if it's a 1-night stay or on a weekend. But it's not the norm AFAIK for people to get suite upgrades.

Cheers.

Sharon your memory is correct about the regular rooms being small(actually VERY small)at the NoLa Marriott-I was shocked.

Not to get too far off topic, but did anyone ever stay in one of the old RI Penthouse Suites? Those had a murphy bed in the downstairs area. (BTW, back when I used to travel to Michigan a lot and take the family, I would fairly regularly get upgraded to a Penthouse suite. ^ )

joshua362 Feb 27, 2009 2:55 pm

Funny you should say that. Outside of full blown, real suites, that Penthouse was my all time favorite room configuration. I used to get it quite a lot on a complementary basis, even for a week at a time. I do miss the old style RI's and go out of my way to stay in them.

Some had a Murphy bed and others had a real first floor bedroom complete with door. Most have fireplaces.

And a "funny now" RI story. About 10 years ago I had the misfortune of staying beneath a Penthouse that seemed to contain an large unsupervised and obnoxious Sports/Church/Youth group who must have gotten their first sips of beer. They treated me to cushion surfing down the internal stairs well into the night. Many calls to Management did little to stop it for good until 3am. On 3 hours sleep, I woke at 6am for my jog. They had retaliated by building a wall of beer cans against my door. I retaliated by slashing 2 tires on their van, getting my night refunded, dragging my butt all day until flying home at 10 pm and never staying there again. It left the Marriott chain shortly after that.

Amazing.

I'm sure the church group sang, "My tires were slashed and I almost crashed but the Lord had mercy."
