It really depends on the property. I have had properties say no to a late checkout before reminding them that I am platinum. After I do that, I am able to get a late checkout without a problem.
For the most part, I have not had to grovel for a late checkout. |
I haven't had problems getting a late checkout. However, I am usually only asking for 1PM or 2PM.
--Jon P.S. I do sometimes have issues with housekeeping starting to bug me at the normal checkout time even though I have been given a late checkout. I just tell them I have a late checkout and to come back later. |
My experience mirrors the Big Guy. When I need it the most, they argue and lie the most. Honestly, status means absolutely nothing here concerning whether you can get it, its the attitude of the property. IMO, its another on of those ancillary benefits like cash checking that is dictated down by MI but a pain for the property to provide so compliance swings wildly.
I read about others having no problem but its always an issue for me. And here's why status means nothing, often I travel weekends for my son's hockey and usually final games are played 11 am - noonish on Sunday. So everyone (meaning twice a year hotel stayers) is asking for a late checkout and the property will flatly ban it, which I understand. Then I remind them of my PLT status and I get a song and dance how if I get it, they'll have to give it to everyone. |
Depends on the property, for sure, as well as the local conditions. I don't know about non-platinum success, but my ability to get a late checkout really depended on the housekeeping staff, it would seem. I've never had a problem with a 1PM or 2PM check-out and have managed 4PM and 5PM a few times (when the rooms didn't need to be turned around quickly).
Hilton properties, on the other hand, have been a real pain to get a late checkout. Despite my Diamond status and spending countless weeks in two particular properties, management figures they're doing me a really big favor by giving me an extra hour to check out. Two hours extra is almost unheard of. |
I've never been given an easy "go ahead" for a late checkout, ever. I always have to fight for a 1PM or 2PM if I get real lucky. This is just another Platinum benefit that is just nice to look at on paper, IMO.

As a Platinum I've only asked for late checkout maybe 2 or 3 times in 15 years and I have never received it.
:td: |
This is kind of a tough one. I understand the property wanting to get people out so it can take care of incoming guests, but once again, why list this as a Platinum benefit if it is only illusory or has to be fought for? A simple solution would be to modify the T & C to read something like, "Upon request, a Platinum member shall automatically be entitled to one extra hour for checkout. Additional time may be granted at the discretion of the property" But then again, that would put the onus on Marriott to actually back up its "guarantee". On a side note, what is personally more important to me is early checkin which I am always granted if there is a room. This is important to me since I take a lot of redeyes from LAX-ATL. I am always arriving early in the morning, and the idea of waiting until the official checkin time of 3p or whatever it is would not work. Fortunately, I am almost always cheerfully given early checkins at times that have ranged from 0900 on. ( I was even given early checkin at 0300 once after the night auditor had closed out the books for the previous day. Flight problems caused this one.)

All i know is that on this two night trip that I'm currently on...
Last night I arrived and checked into an SPG property (b/c I was automatically given a 4PM checkout for today) and tonight Im at the Hyatt b/c well I'm leaving early enough that it doesn't matter about a late checkout. Whenver I need extra time in a room, its ALWAYS an SPG property for me yet they have the same problems that Marriott has cleaning out rooms but they somehow someway seem to manage to get er done |
I've never had a problem getting an extra hour or two, though 4:00 would be pushing it. I try to avoid negotiating in the following way, which seems to be very effective:
Me (on the phone): "Can I get a late checkout tomorrow?" Hotel employee: "How late do you need?" [or want] Me: "How late can you give me?" Hotel employee: "Would 2:00 be late enough?" Me: "Yeah, that's fine. Thanks." [If it's not fine, then we proceed, but I never make the first offer.] By the way, if you call down from your room, they can see instantly that you're Platinum, which can't hurt. Bruce |

Not saying that they can't see it-but rather they need to be reminded(while still making me beg-disgusting)of status,or meybe they just do not care about elite guests which is my guess. |
The hardest place to get a late checkout IME has been the Orlando World Center Marriott. The normal checkout time is 11 am, and I had to pull teeth to get a noon checkout. The other instances which required more effort were at a CY near Orlando. However, I would go back to that CY because it has a good room rate and is close to stores and restaurants.
On the other side, I have gotten late checkouts approved in advance at the Washington Dulles Marriott Suites when a certain manager was working at the front desk the night before checkout. I discovered this the first time when my folio under my door showed a late checkout of 3 pm on the day of checkout (1 pm is the normal checkout). |
A case of see also: "Late checkout" thread that I started in June, after being told that there was no difference for Plats, everyone has to pay after 1pm. I say what is the points of "priority" for late checkout. I have asked at a good few hotels and they have just started with the charging routine, when i say I am a Plat they look all apologetic and say of course you can stay till 2pm. Have never dared ask for anything later, have started using the gym after checkout and using the room before.

I've never really had a problem.

What utter disrespect Marriott shows for its best customers sometimes-and you folks really give them &% nights of your life as well as giving them money?
You deserve better. I agree, however, that since Marriott top tier is much harder to reach than top tier in Hilton or Starwood, they really should show their elites a little bit more love. 500 points when I check in is hardly feelin' it. |
