Thumbs down Marriott Tudor Park in Maidstone, UK

Marriott Tudor Park.

When I entered room, it was very warm so I went and attempted to turn on the AC. It didn’t work so I called front desk and reported the problem. Front desk said they would send maintenance down to take care of it.

20 minutes later maintenance had not arrived. We went to lunch and I stopped by the front desk and asked the front desk associate if he had contacted maintenance and he said that he had. I thanked him and off to lunch we went. After lunch I returned to the room and the door to the AC controls was closed so I knew someone had been there, but the AC still didn’t work. I put on sun screen and headed toward the pro shop for our tee time and stopped by the front desk on the way and let the front desk associate (different than the first one) know that maintenance had been there but that my air conditioning was still not working. She said that she would send maintenance down and have it taken care of right away. Upon returning from my round of golf, I went to the room and the AC was still not working. I went to the front desk and asked a third front desk associate, “Can I speak to the manager please”. He asked if he could help and I replied, “Yes, you can get the manager please”. He called the manager and I reviewed the above details with him. He said he could get maintenance in there straight away or move me to another room. I told him I had unpacked very little thinking that might be the solution so off to my room we went, to move me to a new room. In the new room the AC worked great!

I freshened up and we went to dinner shortly. I came back from dinner and turned on the TV and it immediately went to channel 20 which was some banner indicating the satellite feed or something. I tried going to other channels and after a few seconds it went back to channel 20. All the time whatever picture was showed on the TV went black for a couple seconds every 10 seconds or so. I called “At your service” and the phone rang for about 3 minutes before someone at the front desk finally answered. I told them the TV was not working and they said they would send down maintenance right away. I waited 15 minutes and called again, and they said someone would be down in 5 minutes. I waited another 20 minutes and called again and after the phone rang for a couple minutes without anyone answering, I walked to the front desk and told them that this Marriott was by far the worst Marriott I have every had the occasion to stay in. The front desk associate asked what the problem was and I told him. He came with me down to my room and after showing him the problem, he replaced the remote control and everything appears to be working. I can now get all 7 channels, but not the ones I wanted (CNBC) which were listed in their TV Guide directory. He leaves and I can finally start getting ready for bed but first I noticed a smell coming form the bathroom and decide to flush the toilet thinking the water in the toilet might be the cause. I go to flush the toilet and the handle just goes around 360 degrees but doesn’t flush the toilet. This, as with most UK and many European toilets, has all the mechanical behind a tiled wall so the tank and insides cannot be accessed without removing part of the wall and shelf. Theonly thing showing is this flush handle protruding from the wall, which doesn’t do anything. I called the front desk and tell them the toilet isn’t working. The front desk associate asks if I would like it fixed this evening or in the morning. Geez, where do they find these folks. After waiting about a half hour, their maintenance guy arrives from his home to fix the toilet. Toilet is fixed, I do my thing and room is nice and cool and I go to bed and get a good night sleep. Before I do I call and ask for a 6 AM wake up call because the wake up call button on the phone doesn’t work.

6 AM arrived and I get my wake up call on time. Go to the bathroom and brush my teeth and get a second wake up call about 3 minutes after the first. I get in the shower and yes, you guessed it get a third wake up call in the middle of my shower. Get out of the shower, shave and stuff, and start getting dressed and I get a fourth wake up call, and at this point take the phone off the hook and leave it there.

I open the door and head to breakfast and notice that all the rooms have newspapers hanging on their door except mine, even though I requested it at check-in. Obviously that bit of info didn’t get transferred to my new room.

I golfed again this morning and when I returned from golfing the manager had left a note apologizing for all the problems I encountered and gift that include a bag of plastic golf tees and a ball marker. Now that I am done golfing, I am sure I will not make good use of it during my remaining 3 weeks of travel. I actually found that a bit insulting. Well we will see if anything else is forthcoming, and I do not intend on asking for anything other than a room that works, and good service, which BTW cannot be found in this UK hotel. On a tangential note, restaurant service is extremely slow, including time to prepare food orders.

All-in-all, I would not recommend the Marriott Tudor Park in Maidstone, UK for the obvious reasons stated above.

Yes, I must admit this is the first time in 12 years and just under 600 nights of paid stays that I have encountered a hotel with this many problems. Now the problems themselves could have been overcome with good service, but the part that was most disappointing was the lack of service and follow-up. Now this property is in the UK and while some might say that lack of service is characteristic of the uK, first that is no excuse, and second I have always received exceptional service at RCC in London including this past weekend where I was for 3 nights, and third that is why I stay at Marriott properties to get an expected level of service. Right now I am on a cruise ship somewhere in the Baltic enroute to Tallinn Estonia, so no Marriott properties for the remainder of the trip. I will be in Germany for 6 nights following the cruise but unfortunately the former Renaissance Reißersee Hotel in Garmisch-Partenkirchen is no longer flagged, so I will be staying at a more local Gasthaus.

I stayed at this property last year and, thankfully, did not encounter anything like the problems suffered by the OP. Whilst the service was not sparkling (such as that at Chancery Court or County Hall in London), the staff were eager to assist and were friendly. I have a short break coming up there next month so I'll report back here.

Thumbs down I'm not the only one!

How I smirked on reading this review. I stayed here in May, for a whole week. This was supposed to be our spring holiday, but it felt like a week trying to manage a hotel.

I ordered a Plat arrival gift, which never arrived on the first day (they probably realised they would get away with this as we were there for 9 days), so it was brought up the second day. I had ordered the Muscadet wine, they brought Muscat. When I said this was wrong (I don't like sweet wine) they argued the toss and said that was teh correct one, but I could have the Cote du Rhone instead. When the room service chap brought this, he told me I WAS the one who was correct and he woudl search out a bottle of Muscadet, which to his credit he did. But why did the other staff argue over this?? Why not just give me a balrge bottle of another white wine?

Other issues: like GlenntheBaker, the handle on the toilet just fell off. I asked for it to be fixed, they just shoved it back on. No maintenance men, just the concierge thinking I couldn't cope with such a complicated fix. It need screwing back on not slotting on. We were in a ground floor room with a patio door, which locked with a turn of a handle. Housekeeping left the window next to this open EVERYDAY. We were out all day on two occasions, although we always lock valuables in the safe and take our phones and credit cards. What about our safety?? I often came back alone and anyone could have let themselves in. We also got a dented car as someone hit a golf ball on the car. They had CCTV but no one bothered checking to see who the culprit was and the hotel won't take responsibility, it is their golf course and players that caused it! Breakfast was a joy, we had tinned fruit everyday. This is a 4 star hotel, bot Mrs Miggins guest house. The orange juice was off too.

Then there was the day I was having a snooze and was woken by maintenance trying to get into the room as the maid had said she couldn't access it. She never stopped to think someone had locked the damn door from inside!

Anyway, I wrote and complained and they said that the dented car is not their problem (I can understand the old "we take no responsibility" but this was damage they could prevent with a screen to the car park). They credited me 20,000 extra points, hardly enough to pay for the damaged car.

Looks like they are still fairly useless. The reception staff seemed OK, but communication seems to fall down somewhere ...

Wow, much to my surprise, I received an email from the hotel's GM today. Below is an edited copy:

Dear Mr AAupgrade

Further to your comments we received via Flyer Talk I wanted to take the opportunity to write to you with regards to your concerns pertaining to the experience you had here at the Marriott Tudor Park Hotel & Country Club.

Unfortunately the room you received did have some unforeseen issues which we have rectified due to the recent renovation that has taken place within the hotel. I can understand your frustration in having so many faults with your room and also the wait you experienced in trying to resolve them. I have fedback your comments to my maintenance team to ensure they are more proactive.

The card and gift that was placed in your room was a gesture of goodwill and something relating to golf which we knew you enjoyed, this was in no way meant to be insulting.

Mr AAupgrade, please be assured that the stay you had here is in no way a reflection of the standard of service that our guests normally receive. It is our intention that every guest leaves the hotel with a positive impression and a feeling of value, which the Marriott brand has come to represent. It is clear to me that on this occasion we did not achieve this. To go someway in restoring your faith within Marriott I would like to credit your account with 25,000 Marriott Reward Points, which will show on your account within the next few weeks. If I can be of any further assistance please do not hesitate to contact me.

Kind Regards
<name redacted> | General Manager | Marriott Tudor Park
This was a very nice gesture on their part, and totally unexpected. This will cause me to pause and I will probably try this hotel again if I am in the area, but with much hesitation. I still can't recommend the hotel to others. However, if others do decide to try it, please let us know about your expereinces, both good and bad.

Stay Summary: Tudor Park

Had a 5 day stay here at the Tudor Park Hotel, a Marriott Country Club in Maidstone, UK

This place is probably the nicest hotel within a 20 miles radius. Looks like in the middle of nowhere but pulling into the driveway does make it look like driving into a country club.

Check-in was fast and efficient. Offered Plat points. Offered Plat breakfast for 2 at the Main Restaurant. Offered a room on the "quiet" part of the hotel. No upgrade though.

There is no bellman on staff when we checked in. I think the one and only bellman only works on the weekends or evenings when the hotel is packed.

Accommodation

Standard Hotel-ish room, not very big. Had all the standard amenities and a wall-unit A/C (which I did not use because opening the window and letting in the breeze was better in this part of the UK)

Restaurant
There is one main restaurant in the hotel where the breakfast was offered. The breakfast had all the traditional English fare (beans, bacon, sausage, grilled tomatoes, hash browns, etc.) and a cold buffet area with fruits and cheeses. You can also order cooked-to-order eggs. (But beware, the fried eggs are really "fried", like deep-fried into a gallon of oil.)

Had dinner a couple times at the restaurant. They have the 2 or 3 course menu which was pretty decent and the prices were okay.

Also had lunch/dinner at the "Country Club Bar" overlooking the golf course. Same menu as the Main Restaurant but with some bar specials.

Recreation
This place has one of the better gym/pool in the UK. Multiple rooms of machines, free weights, indoor pool, the whole works.

Some other thoughts
Overall a great stay. Rooms were standard. But beware. The guesroom building is in a shape of a square with a courtyard in the middle with entrance and exit on on side. My "quiet" side room was on the WAY other side of the hotel. Had to drag my luggage up and down up and down couple flights of stairs to make it to my room. If you want to be close, ask for a room on the lower-numbered of the building or higher-numbered rooms (so ending 1-12 and 48 to 60)

Staff and everyone were friendly at this property. Would stay here again.

Kent Christmas Market

I'm considering a visit to the Christmas Market in Kent.
Can anybody share his experiences about this Christmas Market?
- Can you spend 2-3 days?
- What else is there to see except Leeds castle?
- Is this hotel the right place to stay when you visit the Christmas market?

just had another great stay here. everything is mostly the same except for they replaced "deep frying" eggs at breakfast with a flat grill ^

keep in the mind on the weekends, everyone in town hangs out at the hotel. restaurant/bar/lobby/banquet rooms are FULLY packed. make reservations ahead of time even for in-house guest at the hotel restaurant.
