So this is a old thread, but I MIGHT head to ATL for a Phillies game (i have miles and a free night that i can burn)

Soooooo I would either cab it or take MARTA...what hotel would be good?? Don't care about what's around as I won't be there long.....if i even go....BUT I'd like the most bang for the free night! LOL! ATL Marquis?? ATL FS???? Others??

Thanks!

I don't get into ATL as frequently as I used to, so I'm sure there are others who will be more helpful than me. However, I can chime in with a couple of tidbits...

First of all, A number of visiting baseball teams do stay at the Marriott Marquis downtown. One time when I was in town, a colleague scored comp tickets (and gave one to me) from a member of the San Diego Padres entourage whom he shared a drink with in the Marquis bar. It didn't hurt that the guy was from San Diego.

I haven't done this for a ballgame, but I have stayed at the Marriott Perimeter location, which is within walking distance to a large MARTA station. I've done this a couple of times when attending meetings or events downtown.

Perimeter is not the world's greatest FS property, but there's also a good FI in the neighborhood. The FI has reasonable rates and a free breakfast all the time. The FS property frequently offers some good deals on the weekend.

Good restaurants and shopping nearby, but most of these options would involve a short drive.

cyber...thanks....i am toying with that one, or with the Atl DT hotel....

not going to rent a car..so MARTA looks like the way to go!

I could not recommend Perimeter for someone out of town. That property is in a mall area with large office complexes and multiple chain restaurants. No local flair or fare.

Stay downtown at the Marquis (for the previous reasons) or better yet stay in midtown at either of the Residence Inns or the Suites to get the feel of the midtown area neighborhoods (Peidmont Park, boutique shops, local coffehouses and pubs, Georgia Tech, The Varsity, The Fabulous Fox Theatre, The Vortex, The Cheetah, etc.) . Great for walking around and experiencing the city. The two Residence Inns are older buildings coverted to charming hotels. All are within blocks of a Marta station.

Go Braves!

The Midtown RI is an easy Marta ride from ATL. I walked off the plane, took the train and was in my room in 45 minutes. It is less than 2 blocks from the Midtown Marta station, and closet to GTech, and a no. of nice restauraunts, the Varsity, and the train will get you to the ball field easily enough. It is older and a little creaky though.

Well...after much thought and guidance from FTers and a couple people in the CL in the PHL Downtown hotel this AM....I wound up at the Marquis...(I hadn't planned on being here til Tuesday...wound up coming today...another long story...)

Scored another upgrade to an Exec Suite on the 45th floor...very nice..2 plasmas, lots of space...(for just me, but not as much as the Presidential in Philly!:D) Not bad...2 for 2 in FS hotel stays this year....kind of makes up for the 2 for 900 something in the past!!

THe concierge lounge is really beautiful...not sure what they had to eat as I got in too late, but the brownies were quite good^. Wonderful view...tons of seating and flat screens all over...will be interesting to see it in the AM-not sure how packed the place is...I hope to get some pix....

Had a snack in the sports bar....well, it's SUPPOSEDLY a sports bar, but it is VERY nice...not your normal definition thereof...(yummy chix fingers and this skillet peach pie thing....!)

Looks like they just finished redoing the place, but it's hard to say for sure. The lobby is nice, as are the various lounges....but the elevator landings are rather dark...

Got here pretty easily however one side of the MARTA station is closed and it took longer to walk here than it should have...plus once you're inside the Peachtree "mall" (i use that term loosely) it's not well marked.......

Nice view of downtown....actually I was even able to see the hotel from the plane too!

Tomorrow, it's the Phillies game, a quick trip to the Varsity, pop into CNN and hang out in my room....then my little vagabonding will be done, and it's back to home and looking after my mom.......

That is a link to my photos...just got home today! nice hotel...nice stay. They do need to brighten up the elevator landing areas, as aside from the one by the CL, they make the place look like scummy hotel...not a lovely M!

The lounge was OK....it is very pretty but it's just the usual breakfast stuff (with scrambled eggs, breads, little muffin top things and frozen Sara Lee-esque cheese danish....I never saw the PM offerings as i was too late and/or at baseball games....Staff was mostly excellent (just a couple that didn't follow through, but nothing horrible..) Breakfast buffet in the restaurant is $22 (ouch) and wasn't very good...server was nice but not helpful...all she did was pour coffee...i asked about crispy bacon, she told me to tell the cook...(IME previously I told the server and they got it for me instead of my having to stand around and wait for it while my food got cold...) I wound up getting them to comp the meal as I had a shirt ripped by a piece of sharp metal on the railing on the floor to ceiling windows....(they asked what they could do.....the shirt cost less than $22 bucks-breakfast wasn't that great and I presume they were glad I didn't get hurt!)

The sports bar (high velocity) was nice...good food, very comfy seats (actually there are nice seats -arm chairs and ottomans, etc all over...) and great service....

If anyone has questions, fire away.......it was convenient to everything--easy $8.00 FLAT cab fare anyplace in the city. MARTA is easy to reach thru the peachtree center mall (I use 'mall" loosely!) The only problem was one escalator is down for major repairs so it took me a while to get to the hotel (it was around 9PM when I arrived..i walked around a couple blocks....finally found it!)

Renaissance Waverly?

Hi all,

As the ATL experts have chimed in on this thread, I wanted to get opinions on the Renaissance Waverly (up by Galleria Center).

I'll be there next week (company negotiated rate, so no real choice of location, other than the Courtyard Cumberland which can only offer me a room with double beds instead of queen/king size).

Thanks in advance,

GenevaFlyer

The Ren Waverly is a very nice hotel (or was a few years ago). It's in a mall area surrounded by concrete, pavement, steel, and glass but if you are there on business then you'll be comfortable and convienient.

There is a Marriott in the general area (not adjacent to the Galleria) I think it's called Marriott NorthWest. But the Ren is still nicer.

I don't think Marta goes to that area so public transportation to downtown or midtown neighborhoods is not good.
