Value of Points

Trying to determine how to value points. I have a choice either 10k or 15k points(couldnt understand what was said) or $75. Which is the better deal?

With the recent devaluation, I now value my Marriott points at .70 cents (7/10 of 1 cent) each. So, if your choice is $75 or 10K, I'd take the $75. At 15K, I would take the points.

If you spent the $75 at a hotel, you'd get 750 points or, about 1/10th of a night at a category one hotel.

With 10,000 points you could get 1 night at a category one or two. With 15,000 points, you could get 2 nights at a cat. 1 or 1 night at cat 2 or 3.

To get 10,000 points you'd have to spend $1,000, to get 15,000, youd have to spend 1,500.

I value my points at least at $0.12. In your case I would pay the $75.

I have an upcoming 7-night stay at a Marriott which will cost me $1200 but I won't spend 130,000 for the available standard reward so I will pay for it.

Im guessing you mean 1.2 cents per point. I think there are ways to get upto ~ 2 cents per point in value, but unlike real money you can only spend points at marriott so saying the points are worth 2 cents each is not really true. However, getting less than 1 cent a point is probably not a good use right?

I just checked on an award I have coming up and it came out to about 1.3 cents per point. It was a pretty good redemption (Kauai), so I'd say about a penny a point is a good value.

I would still value a point at about a penny and seek to redeem only when I can get at least 1.3-1.5 cents per point, including the opportunity cost of points not earned when using a reward. Room rates in many places have gone up quite a bit even with the devaluation. Also, you can earn points a lot quicker with an elite bonus, the premier Marriott card, and participating in Marriott promotions.
