Upgrade Marriott VISA card?
Is it possible to switch to the visa signature card from the regular marriott card? Has anyone been able to do so or you need to apply seperately?
(Sorry misspelled Marriott) |
I'm assuming when you say "switch to the visa signature card from the regular marriott card" you are wanting to switch from the base Marriott Signature Visa to the Premier Marriott Visa. If that is a correct assumption, then yes, you can upgrade/change your card to the Premier card if you so choose. Based on previous posts on this issue, there were some issues early on with those who chose that route (i.e. not getting all the benefits, etc.) But hopefully, they have ironed out all those details by now.
In fact, my wife had a regular Marriott Signature Visa that I cancelled last week as she isn't using it. The person I spoke with mentioned that she could upgrade the account rather than close it. |
Premier Visa
I "upgraded" from the Signature Visa to the Premier Visa yesterday by calling the customer service ## on my card; very easy and I keep the same account number. Annual fee is more ($65 versus $30), but the additional points should be worth it for me based on some upcoming travel.

In addition to the extra points, etc, the annual fee difference is more than covered by the fact that you get a free Cat 1-5 night stay every year after you sign-up or upgrade to the card.

Deflyer or anyone
Do you know if you get the free night certificate upon upgrade or only on your year anniversary? When I called they said I can upgrade but I will only get the golf cert, not the free night cert until next yr and get charged $65 or whatever the annual fee is. |
It may depend on the wording of the ad you responded to.
Originally the website said the free 1-4 was only for persons not already holding the Signature Premier card. Based on that, I got the free 1-4 certificate because of converting the regular Signature VISA to the Premier Signature VISA. More recently, however, the site says the initial free 1-4 was for persons not already holding the Signature VISA (see footnote 3 on this site), so on that premise you wouldn't get the initial 1-4 for converting. |

A year ago, some folks learned the hard way that you need to click on the offer link and open a new account - then, after you have your new card, close the old account (consolidate the credit lines if you like).
Calling to "upgrade" didn't net all of the sign-up bennies. I don't know if this has changed or not. In either case, you should get the recurring Free Night certs and the 15 nights' credit every time you pay the $65. |
Dont care bout the 15k pts (though it would be nice). More worried bout not getting free cat certificate

I applied for all three cards at once, and received two free hotel certs and one golf cert. I' currently used the MR Visa and MR Premier Visa and have received both 15K bonuses. I still need to use the business card. If the 15K does not post from this card, then that is where the free cert is missing from.
I have since closed by MR Visa and transferred that CL to the Premier Visa, giving me close to a 50K CL...not bad if you like to sport high credit limits. |
Beause of confusion of upgrading, etc., I just applied for the new card. Applied for my wife, also. We both got the 15K, 15 nights, and the free night cert. Don't know about the golf thing.
I had intended to cancel the other card when the renewal fee came due, but it never has, so I have both cards. I have to remember to use the new one, because I suspect the old one will only get me 3 pts/$ on Marriott spend. |
