My BB doesn't expire till September...

...even though I received it in January.

I stayed at a Marriott in Maryland in early December, using the BB code, but thought the certificate would come in the mail later, so I didn't say anything when I checked out. I waited until early January, then called Marriott Rewards by phone, saying that I thought perhaps I should have received the BB by then and was wondering when it might arrive. I received a phone call back from the hotel manager, profusely apologizing for the oversight, and within a week received the BB, which won't expire until September - a 9-month window! I am VERY pleased with how Marriott handled it.

Perhaps calling central Marriott Rewards customer service, where upper management/marketing may become aware of situations like this, is the way to go. The hotel itself wouldn't necessarily be accountable to Marriott management for keeping the customer happy.

Just realized the same thing happened to us....

checked out of the Newark Marriott on March 31 and received a $50 Bonus Buck as part of the rate package. Didn't really look at it until today when I noticed it expires on April 19.

We'll actually have ELEVEN Marriott night stays between the checkout from the Newark Marriott and April 19 but unfortunately could not have used the BB for any of those (5 award nights and 6 single night stays).

Think I'll have any luck as a Platinum member calling the Newark Marriott and asking for a replacement BB????

:(

As I said in the OTHER thread on this very same topic ( ), the current T&C language indicates an expiration of THREE MONTHS from issuance.

So you should at least be able to get that! @:-)

That's surprising! I just got my hands on BBs expiring Nov. & Dec. 2007, which = 7+ months :) !

New restriction on Bonus Bucks starting November 2007

The rules are written in different order but content is all the same except new #9:
"This Coupon cannot be used in conjunction with ...Marriott prepaid cards and Cheques..."

How dare they?! We paid full price real money for the Prepaid Cards with the understanding that they would be treated as cash-equivalent!

In reality, I doubt that this will be enforced re Prepaid Cards, because they are swiped in the CC accepter machine just like any Visa card. But Marriott Cheques--who knows? If they do enforce this, it will make Cheques less valuable/ desirable.

Though I know it SHOULD be simple to get a replacement Bonus Buck, it just took me 3 calls to Marriott to get someone knowledgeable enough at the hotel in question to offer to replace my Bonus Buck which expires in 3 days.....AND I have to send the expiring one back.

By the way, we tried to get the original BB upon check-in, but were told brusquely "you have to actually STAY and PAY first"......necessitating a return to the front desk at our 4am check-out.

:td:

You know, no matter how positive your attitude, its very easy to quickly turn when dealing with all the problems, bait & switches being pulled lately in MR.

God knows how many wasted man hours I've spent lately chasing promised benefits, rewards, coupons, free night certificates, etc?

I understand the need for rules & regulations, T&C's, etc, but there is always a gotcha why things just don't work easily. If the rules and regulations are so complex that their own employees can't follow the rules or apply some common sense (as to quick expiration dates) that the only recourse is to march up the ladder (again at great personal wastes of time), then maybe things are out of control. The tax code is simplier at times!

jonathansullivan Apr 16, 2007 8:28 pm

Can that actually be enforced? Aren't there laws regarding Gift Cards/Gift Certificates?

Wow...Marriott Strikes Again.

holtju2 Apr 16, 2007 8:49 pm

I have very hard time understanding why these couldn't be used in conjunction with Marriott prepaid cards. The prepaid cards (gift cards) are just Marriott branded visa stored value cards that the hotels see as Visa and nothing else. I believe that the Marriott corporate should loosen up a bit and spend their time on more important issues.

bigguyinpasadena Apr 16, 2007 9:21 pm

Since many of us bought large quantities of prepaid cards during the promo last year I fail to see how Marriott could legaly enforce such a requirement.
These instraments were purchased in good faith that they would be honored as cash.
Every week Marriott has given us yet one more reason to leave. One more example of dissrespect. Is this their new"Spirit to Serve"?The new "Marriott Way"?It is beyond disgusting.

ekert Apr 16, 2007 9:39 pm

I highly doubt that this will be enforced.

pinniped Apr 16, 2007 9:48 pm

At worst, enforcement will vary by state and country. In many places this would be illegal, and here in the U.S., states are paying very close attention to dubious giftcard practices across the board.

At best, Marriott simply won't stoop to something this dirty - even in countries/states where other companies are allowed to get away with scam giftcard operations with lax or no prosecution. Until I see proof otherwise, I think Marriott is better than this.

Of course, they did write it into the T's & C's. That alone is bothersome.

ekert Apr 16, 2007 9:49 pm

This is starting to worry me as I'll be in Marriotts pretty much the entire month of May and will be accumulating about 6 $100 BBs. They will do me absolutely no good if they expire a few weeks after issuance (or even two months for that matter). The ones I've earned in the past typically had expiration dates about 6 months out and have my fingers crossed it will continue to be this way.
