Marriott Cheques are treated as cash with the caveat that, "Marriott Cheques are not redeemable for cash or Marriott Gift Certificates. Change will not be given on cheques presented as payment for goods and services."
This is from number 2 of the T&C of this page: marriott.com/rewards/moreRewardDetail.mi?marrRewardCode=194&points=33,0 00&elite=false |
Uh-oh! From VA1379's link:
T&C 3. Marriott Cheques may be used for all publicly listed and available room rates and packages, but cannot be used for convention, travel industry, tour, advance purchase, catering, or group room rates. So, almost like cash. |
I was wondering a similar thing. I was interested in buying a 1000 cheque but it says they dont give change. I was thinking about using it for stays at various hotels during a trip but it sounds like I cant do that.

do they expire?
Hi,
I asked the following as part of a post in another forum about MyPoints... so I apologize for asking twice, but I just figured that this was the more logical place :) : Do Marriott Cheques expire after a length of time from purchase? |
Every Cheque has an expiration date. IIRC, each cheque should be good for about 15-18 months after it is issued.

Terms and Conditions 1. Marriott Cheques may not be accepted at concessions within the hotel not owned or operated by Marriott. Please confirm with the hotel prior to making the purchase. 2. Marriott Cheques are not redeemable for cash or Marriott Gift Certificates. Change will not be given on cheques presented as payment for goods and services. Cheques are void and will not be honored if sold for cash or other consideration. 3. Marriott Cheques may be used for all publicly listed and available room rates and packages, but cannot be used for convention, travel industry, tour, advance purchase, catering, or group room rates. 4. Marriott Cheques are not replaceable if lost, stolen, destroyed, or expired. 5. Any tax liability, including disclosure, connected with receipt or use of this award is the recipient's responsibility. 6. Cheques will be converted into local currency value at the hotel's current exchange rate. The one year expiration date, while not listed above, is what I was told by the PLT desk. If you are ME elite there is a deal on the web site that will enable you to buy the cheques with points at a 25% discount for number of points required. 25% off Another plus to Marriott Cheques is that you still earn both points and night credit when using these to pay for hotel charges, so they are are just like using cash or a credit card to pay for charges. |

5 nights at Category 6 hotels requires 110, 000 points Marriott Cheques for $1,000 will require 135,000 points If I spend $1000 at a Marriott and pay with the cheques I will earn 10,000 points, so the net difference will be 12,000 points as a PLT. (135,000 – 110,000 + 13,000) So for the cost of the 15,000 points, I’m also getting 5 nights credit to that will apply towards any MR elite level. For some this may well be worth it. YMMV BTW, the above is a real example in that for the five night stay I have coming up, my room only charges will be around $900.00. Of course if your room charges alone are above $200 a night, the above example has less value for every $ over 200 a night your room charge is and you might be better off using the room award instead. |
The elite offer for Marriott Cheques at JW Marriott resorts has expired. The T&C state that it expired on December 31, 2005.
If you are an elite member of Marriott, you will also earn an elite bonus for the Marriott Gift Cheques applied to the room rate, excluding taxes. If you have $1000 in room rate and incidentals (for FS properties only), then you would earn somewhere between 12,000 to 13,000 points off the $1000 Gift Cheque. |
