Premium Pound Apr 10, 2008 9:51 pm

Why would anyone want to use Bonus Bucks?????????

When they could use Premium Pounds instead.

I am a long time lurker but have never posted before. But I don't understand the many posts pertaining to Bonus Buck use.

Bonus Bucks = $50 off per night
Premium Pounds = $100 off per night

Even when I get Bonus Bucks for free I put them on E bay rather than lose the $100 more I get off by using a PP certificate.

Because we dont get Premium Pounds?

They are easy to get.

I have several sources. You can also buy them on E bay.

Certain promotional rates include Bonus Bucks for free. These rates are a lot cheaper than the regularly available rates. I have probably used over $10,000 in Bonus Bucks in the past 3 years.

I agree with the OP however I used to enjoy the 50 BB as I could use at the low level MR Properties; It was only this week that I learned that 50 PP's could be used there as well

I will say though that its a hassle to try to get PP's. I don't do EBAY other than to price out what they market rate is for them. I don't see many 50 PP's on there as well

If that's true, why are you so obsessed with this, such that you select "Premium Pound" as your Flyertalk handle? Mr. or Ms. Premium Pound is how folks will recognize you for years to come - is that what you want? Seems like a very strange choice to be wnat to be known as the Premium Pound person everywhere on Flyertalk.

The BBs I have are for $100 dollars. I bought a ton of them during the geico $20 sale. Seems like a pretty good return to me.

What are your sources of the PPs? PM me if needed.

Do you have any hasle using them in the US?

I am a huge proponent of both BB's and PP's - and will use either whenever possible. They are one of my fav parts of the Marriott program! But with regards to the posts made here:

I hope your email address is not the same on ebay as it is here, as it is against T&C's to sell them.

They are not "easy to get" if you are based in the US. Yes, you can buy them on ebay - but (usually) the win cost is an avg of $75 for a 100PP. I can get a 100 BB for free through legitimate stays - we are only talking about a $25 difference. Not a big enough difference to actively, continually pursue PP's from unknown sources. IMO. You may have several sources to buy from direct, but most people don't.

Unless you are trying to position yourself to be a source for people to "contact" re Premium Pounds.........?????????

I use them in the US in major cities with no issue or problem. The GEICO thing was spectacular - and I am sorry I did not get more, as I don't think we will see a return of that program! (but would love to be proved wrong) I have never seen PP's at $40; so your return will exceed the OP's regarding purchasing PP's.

This next statement is absolutely NOT directed at the OP.........
but food for thought: I cannot think of any legitimate way that a person would have endless access to PP's. (or BB's, for that matter).

I got all my Bonus Bucks from Marriott promotional rates, and they were mostly $100 ones.

TrojanHorse Apr 11, 2008 11:01 am

my problem with the $100 BB are that at rack rate (for 2 nights) the $100 discount is not that great of a deal when you can use AAA XML GOV or any multitude of other codes that make the 100 BB in some instances a losing transaction.

the 100 PP coming in at ball park $195 + USD even makes the rack rate deals a bargain in many situations.

I've seen EBAY prices on PP's with expiration in the one month timeframe go for $40

sophiegirl Apr 11, 2008 7:47 pm

The cities in which you use BB's can make a huge difference. DC is much higher than CLT - 2 weeks ago, I got a room at the Ren in CLT for the weekend for $99- so a standard BB gave me (basically) one night free - and there were no "member" rates that came close. I was originally looking at FS in the CLE/PIT area for this weekend - both had FS that came in @ $109. ebreaks are another rate on which they work really well. what I have learned is that you can never count on any "one" thing being best when trying to find the lowest rate.

Of course PP's are always going to be worth twice as much if you travel overseas and get them free. If you are paying for them, they are still better than BB's - but are not always worth twice in face value.

Everyone is different. in planning a getaway for a pricier hotel, usually a month out does not help me - but could certainly come in handy if I needed to gain 2 more nights at year end to qualify for a level, or at the tail end of a mega-bonus promotion.

The reason Premium Pound is my handle is because they are the reason for my post. I just don't understand the logic of paying $20 for a Geico BB when PP's are a MUCH better deal. I have learned a lot on here and wanted to share my 2 cents on PP's vs. BB's.

The Geico deal would only be good if you can't get Premium Pounds. Otherwise, it isn't even close.

$100 - $20 = $80 savings
$200 - $65 = $135 savings

I would rather pay $115 for a PP then get a $20 BB from Geico.

Also, there are ways to get PP's even if your in the U.S. Just look for a company in the Uk that sells them.

I have never had a problem using them. Not even once. And I stay in Marriott's over two hundred nights a year

The Cairo Marriott Zamalek gave me many problems to use a PP

The best use of Premium Pounds is their use in addition to a LNF Guarantee. I have been able to do this numerous times in both the US and foreign locations.

iwpingmu Apr 12, 2008 10:45 am

you should try PPs, a PP (after cost) can still save more than a BB even if you get a free BB
