HNL what to do for 12 hrs until flight?

No idea as to how long you would have been at HNL prior to your departure. However, personally, if I have a midnight flight, I would splurge and pay for an extra night at the hotel. Yes it is pricey, but you will be surprised at how much it feels that you have an extended vactaion; i.e. an whole extra day.

It also depends on the reception staff. Checking out "early" at 8:30 pm at the Renaissance at Time Square, NYC last month (when we did book for an extra night), the receptionist only charge us $100 for the last day instead of the full price of $500+ because the cost of the room had not been automatically added to the bill as yet. We did not ask for this arrangement but were offered it. We have no status with Marriott so it was the reception staff being nice.

If you do not want to take a chance of being charged for the full night's rate, then an option is to wait for the morning of the check-out day to see if they are willing to let you have a room for half a day (say until 6 pm) for a small fee Hotels may do this if the room would be empty anyway and if their housekeeping staff who would turn the room around in the evening when they are providing a turn down service. A place like HNL where flights come in at all times of day, particularly evening flights, have a better probability of such a practice. However, this does not really work in Las Vegas where hotels are more concerned with their casino business rather than their hotel business!

Some hotel chains charge by 24 hour occupancy; i.e. if you check in late evening, you get to check out late evenings. This is works at the Sofitel chain (not sure if they have a hotel in HNL) and one or two others.

I do not think there is anyway to have a nice leisurely dinner at HNL or around HNL.

And I'm trying to figure out what this has to do with Marriott.

Try the Hawaii Travel board.

Renaissance Ilikai?? Visited in Dec. 2005. 20 bucks to park your car? (Unacceptable) Ocean View? (No way) Restaurants? (Poor Value). Pool? (Laughable) Half-day rate? (irrelevant)

What would I do with available daylight in HNL.
Golf, shower, & dinner at a great country club.

Perhaps visitors from Illinois expect more bang for their buck.

if you really wanted to do the beach thing, check to see if the hotel has a hospitality suite. many beach hotels do, so you can take advantage of another beach day then shower & clean up before you have to fly back

A: You didn't ask about late check-out.

B: You didn't ask about hotel restaurants.

C: What you did ask belongs in the Hawaii forum.

The most cost effective way would be to ask for a very late checkout, followed by a dinner then get a good book to read while waiting at the airport.

You should also ask the hotel if they will accomodate an "incidental stay" (which is a stay for less than a full night) on your last day if you want to hang around longer than a late checkout would allow. As another poster mentioned, this will cost much less than a full night's stay.

You should note that you will get MR points credit for the dollars spent but you will not get a night's credit towards elite status for incidental stays.

We usually keep the room for the extra night, no stress, like an extra day. Once we didn't and we went to a sports bar, recommended by the JW bellboys, near the airport. Kids played video games, ate snacks, we relaxed as best as you can do in a smokey sports bar. Now that they've reopened an admirals club, that's where we'd head for the last couple of hours. Before you plan to buy a day pass, check what ammentites they offer. The orginal AA club was very small if I recall. Got there to late to check out the new/shared one.

Our last time (it was Mauii) we checked our bags at the airport 4 hours ahead of our flight. Then we went to dinner and a movie. It worked out well.

Yes you can. Just stop by the Shower Tree Mini Hotel on your way to the airport and take a shower for $8. @:-)
