Received this via snail-mail for my wife today. Tried my account and it got rejected, so its obviously targeted.

It's not double points on your room, just double points on the VISA purchase when spending at Marriott (6 points / dollar vs. the noral 3 points / dollar). Valid for purchases from 11/15/04 to 02/15/05.

If you're targeted and consider using it, remember that the AMEX deal is still going on (3 stays paid for with AMEX gets 5,000 bonus points). The double VISA points is probably only good if you've maxed out on the AMEX promo or if you're having a long stay with no check outs (or if you don't expect to get 3 stays).

I just followed the link and typed in my account number, and hey, presto! I'm registered!

I didn't get anymail notification (yet) and I'm a plat, so I'd strongly suggest anyone who's interested (and who isn't? :) ) to give it a try. The worst they can say is Sorry...

Update: I received my offer in the mail today, so guess it really is a targetted offer. So, what are the criteria?

1. I'm a plat with 130+ nights this year. What are they trying to rope me in for? They already own me.

2. I just completed the AMEX promo, so I didn't use the Visa card for a couple of months. Trying to get me "back in the fold"?

btw, it appears to be retroactive -- that is, you can register any time up to Feb 15, 2005 and get credit for Marriott/Visa stays back to Nov. 15. It appears you don't get the bonus on a monthly basis, but a big lump at the end of the promo. Hmmm. Might be interesting to see if we get the normal 3 points on a monthly basis and the other 3 at the end or what.

Anyhow, I'm happy. This brings me up to 19 pts/$, which is pretty good for Marriott.

Got the same negative response when I tried. Pisses me off that some people get a benefit that others in the same elite class (I'm Silver) don't. Why are they entitled to it and I'm not?

Strange... I meet those 2 criteria almost to a T. But I didn't qualify. :(

Like a lot of promotions, it may be aimed at a cross-section of different status holders in part to see who it appeals to, where, in addition to just luring some folks in. I don't think companies necessarily always look at promotions as a reward to certain members based on their past/recent behavior - they are looking at geography, income, age, and other demographics for clues about where there is opp for revenue growth. All the programs have their most loyal, regular customers and those among us in these categories only occasionally jump programs. I received the promo - only about 7 nights this year but previously a plat - have stayed more nights at Hilton this year, got a Hilton cc - I would not be surprised that Marriott learns some of this info through credit reports and other.
