"Wireless Highspeed Access" problems
 

The majority of Marriotts I've stayed in do not have a wireless network but at the few that do, I've had nothing but problems trying to connect. I've tried using my wireless card as well as the bridge supplied by the hotel. Anyone else had any issues at the Wi-Fi Marriotts.

BTW, Marriott tech support mentioned that they seem to get more calls from people with rooms on the concierge level (furthest away from the wireless router?) so beware!

I'm sure it's just me, but I have never been able to connect to any hotel wireless networks with my wireless card. No problem with the wired connection, just wireless giving me problems. Must have set up the thing to only connect to my home wireless network. Is that even possible? So nowadays I have to make sure the hotel has wired HSIA. :(

choptliva: Are you using Windows-XP? If so the connection should be pretty automatic, although it still has issues which are FIXED in the upcoming Service Pack 2! Also...are you using a personal Firewall (or the built in XP-firewall) These could also be hampering your efforts. Try shutting them off temporarily and see if that helps.

I used the wireless system at the Alexandria, VA, Courtyard (near the airport) once this year. It was no problem for me.

I've never had more than temporary problems with any WiFi's. But, it may be your wireless card. Interestingly enough, at a TownePlace once, I couldn't get connected to save my life. Just couldn't find the signal. I *knew* all my settings were correct, but nothing. So, I swapped out my wireless card (Why I have 2 I don't know) and instantly things worked great.

I don't know if there was some kind of a hardware conflict between my puter, my wireless card and the hotel's system or what.

I sometimes need to play with my PowerBook to get her to connect to the wireless system (she tends to like to autoconfigure herself with an IP that doesn't match what the propety is on), but after futzing with it 5-10 minutes, it worls.

My XP laptop, of course, connects right away. Go figure. :)

Sometimes it helps to use a signal "finding" program like BOINGO which is free from their web site. It automatically finds signals and automatically adjusts the SSID. All you need do is click "connect".

A more complex program is netstumbler, but still free.
