Does Two Twin Beds Pushed Together = One King?

Chris (or anyone else):

I was surprised at my recent stay in London (Grosvenor House) to find that my king bed consisted of two twins pushed together. Is this common in your non-US properties?

Thanks.

Very common in Europe, and not just at Marriotts. The nicer hotels will at least put a single king-sized fitted sheet around the two mattresses. The really fancy ones have an insert that holds the mattresses together and sort of feels like a single mattress...unless one gets, shall we say, too active with one's partner in the center of the bed. ;)

At least Starwood will usually advertise this fact on their website as "Two Twins: Join as King".

I haven't been to that particular hotel, but I've stayed in some older places in Italy (non-chain hotels) that have that - the reasoning was because a king bed is too big of a fixture to get into the rooms in these hotels.

Very common and very annoying. I still remember "falling" into the middle of my bed in Hong Kong (at the Hyatt) and getting no sleep during a four day business trip. Finally just separated them and slept on half as a single.

For the last couple years, I've had king mattresses on two twin boxsprings.

Have stayed at a number of (non-chain) hotels in continental Europe over the past three years. Normally a king/double bed is two singles pushed together, with seperate base sheets and seperate (narrow) duvets - not very "sociable" :(

In the US, you tend to know how to do big beds - the rest of the world tends to take a while to catch on... ;)

Yes, two twins does equal a king. I might also add that two two roll away cots equals a queen and an inflatable air mattress can be substituted for a double. If you are so unlucky to be in a room with a twin then cushions off the couch with a sheet over the top is acceptable.
