Looking for recs in WV

I'm driving from Toronto to Lake Lure, NC this Friday, I-79 to I-64 then I-77

Morgantown, WV is probably the right place for us to overnight, as it breaks the trip into 6 hrs first day and 7 the next.

I'm wondering which is the best property to try for in Morgantown or ???, hopefully using one of my Rewards Certs good for 1 night up to 25,000 points?

No need for a pool or fancy resto, but free (good) breakfast is always nice.

It's not a Marriott, and it's not going to be cheap - but if you have a chance (and assuming you are not going to be going to/through WV anytime soon again), spend a night at The Greenbrier - you won't forget it

Especially if you loved staying at Grandma's house as a kid! (See photo)

(Only poking a little fun at this mid-Atlantic stalwart...I'm a sucker for tradition and places that buck the trend of "the latest thing")

Oh, and OP, re: your actual question, this probably isn't doable with a cert but the price could be low - I'd just go with the Marriott at Waterfront Place; good location on the river and walkable to the downtown restaurants, breweries, etc.

If thinking about stopping in Morgantown, you may want to check availability. There is a WVU football game next Saturday. Morgantown gets crazy on football weekends

In which case OP should pay any price being asked for the opportunity to be in town. :D

The Greenbrier is 3 hours past Morgantown. It's a nice place to spend a long weekend, exploring the grounds, taking in the activities, touring the bunker, etc. But not really a place for an overnight stop, adding an hour to the trip, and extending the first segment 3 hours, IMHO.

OP, are you looking to spend money on a nice place (Greenbriar, Waterfront ) or just a place to crash with the shortest detour?

For the latter, I'd stop at the FI in Morgantown - literally 500 feet from 79 South.

(side note - are you really taking 79 over to 64 in Charleston then down to 77, not 79 to US19 to 77? Trailering a boat or something and want to avoid 19? Just curious - I've made the trip many times.

And 64 is concurrent with 77 for that stretch, so you're still just 79 to 77 anyway. )

Agree regarding routing; I misread the map. Will be doing I-79, US-19, I-77

Like the FI&S and have booked using my 25k cert, so now all set.

Thanks to all who posted suggestions

Watch out for strict speed enforcement on that stretch of US-19 especially around lowered limits in more urban stretches. I drove it a couple of weeks ago and there were lots of cops along the way. Waze is your friend!

If you want a nonchain traditional experience, something else to consider is one of the lodges in WV state parks.
