Use Marriott gift card in Starwood hotels soon?

2. From which date, can I use Marriott gift card in Starwood hotels?

3Cforme Jul 13, 2018 5:22 am

I wouldn't assume that date is in the near future. Combining Marriott Rewards and SPG doesn't necessarily change the franchise agreements (requiring ex-Starwood properties to accept Marriott gift cards) or payment systems.

On the date that Marriott announces you can do it.

Delta is a Marriott brand, not a Starwood brand. But you can't use a Marriott gift card at the Delta Garden Grove CA, because "we're too new" (now over 3 months with the Marriott program, but still no stays post, can't accept Marriott gift cards, etc, etc).

So don't even assume you can use Marriott gift cards at every Marriott program property. Many yes, every no.

That's funny. Delta Grand Rapids couldn't do gift card, couldn't post stay properly. "Too new," I'm told. They've been open for 9 months. Must be the Delta software?

It's difficult enough to redeem a Marriott GC at a Marriott!

I hope they do by April. Planning to stay at Sheraton Sydney and was thinking gift cards would be a good way to avoid credit card fees!

Trying to use some gift cards to offset a few hundred dollars in Room Service charges, on an award stay in Florida. Front desk people are stumped. Supervisor is discussing with property’s Finance Department.
I will report back.

Disappointed. Staying at W south Beach on an awards stay, with points. Front desk checked with Finance Department, and says gift cards cannot be used , because it is a resort property.
I am not sure that is correct. May just be “we don’t know how to do it.”
other than that, the W South Beach is Wonderful.

Maybe I am missing something, but my understanding is that you will lose more money with a gift card because the hotel will convert AUD to CAD at their price which is normally lot worse than Foreign transaction Fee + Visa/Master conversion rate combined.

This is normal. I tried to use a gift card only once (at Courtyard, Namdaemun, Seoul), it took almost a day before FD figured how (if at all) to use it. They took the GC number, and tole me, they will let me know tomorrow (or by evening). When I checked in the evening they said they were able to apply it to my stay.

I did the GC coz I was trying to hit my spending on Chase Marriott card.

That is incorrect. My experience with gift cards is they use the XE rate, or something similar to convert. It is not the cash exchange rate that the front desk gives you.

My gift cards are in USD and I used one of them at Courtyard YYZ and the exchange rate was spot on.
