this is exactly what i am waiting to do as well....my card anniversary is in november....i don't care much about the 15 nights since i've already crossed 140+ nights for the year & will have ltpp status in the new program but i don't want to jeopardize my free night....

After receiving a poor upgrade offer and discovering that I would have to wait a full year from my application date to get the 35K free night (when the free night was set to post in a matter of days), I canceled the card in late April. I had received my previous Marriott Rewards card bonus in late July 2016, so I am now clear of the two year mark. And the window to get a new Marriott Chase card is closing, as I already hold the SPG Amex.

So here's my quandary. I don't really need a 2nd Marriott card. However, the 75K bonus would be nice and could be my last chance for a while. And those bonus points are essential to my recent annual 5 night stay at the Mauna Kea habit. If the card's just going to sit in my wallet after earning the bonus, is it worth getting? The annual free night may be worth the annual fee, depending upon how I use it.

Clock is ticking, as in 2 weeks this option will not be here. Any advice?

Well, depending on your 5/24 status, people here will generally tell you to go for it. Marriott is basically making us choose between AMEX and Chase. However, the AMEX cards offer a once in a lifetime bonus (which I think is every 7 years or so). At least the Chase cards will let you apply again 24 months after receiving the last bonus. Visa cards are typically accepted in more places than AMEX as well.

My advice would be to look at your number of apps over the last 24 months and decide how this fits into your overall strategy with Chase. For example, if you are 4/24, them maybe there could be other cards that would be a better fit for you than the Marriott Visa right now. I don't worry about a card sitting unused in a drawer, especially when the card has an annual fee.

Just applied and got the 30 days for a decision by US Mail for the new card application.

Wonder if Chase will wait to approve me until after 08/26 so I'm ineligible for the signup bonus points due to being a current SPG Amex cardholder...

that's a twist I had not considered. Guess hat means at a minimum I won't wait until the 25th. I think I'm now at 4/24, assuming my Lowes card doesn't count. No other chase cards in my sight. Is there any reliable way to know chase considers me bonus eligible?

I don't really have anything to base this on but I have to think there's a possibility the 100K offer comes back to align with the "launch" of the new program. I canceled the old one and currently am gonna hold out a little longer to see if my suspicion holds true.

Worst case, I don't think the 75,000 offer will be gone for long if it is at all. If I remember correctly I think the 70,000 range wasn't very uncommon with the old card so I don't really see why that would change, especially as I'm sure they want former SPG members to sign up as well.

As an update, I've been informed by a specialist on the new credit line that my application was actually an insta-deny that never hit the credit bureaus, because they did not recognize the account as closed. Apparently it recognized I already had a Marriott credit card account with chase, thus no hard pull on my credit report and denial.

I was told to give it a couple days. The rep at Chase then asked if I had a balance on the card (even though it was closed, the next payment was not due yet). Rep told me to get the old MR Visa to zero balance (I wasn't carrying a balance, but I had my statement balance + autopay date in the future) and wait a couple days, then re-apply, and system should recognize that I no longer have MR Visa + highly likely approval.

Hope this helps anyone who is trying to churn the bonus before the 08/26/2018 signup bonus changes that prevent you from getting the bonus on the chase Card if you currently hold the SPG Amex.

How many days after hitting the 5k threshold did the pts show up in your account? Been a week for me thus far and my CC statement turned over. Curious when theyll post.

For me it was when regular points posted for the second statement after hitting the $5K threshold. I saw somewhere (don't recall where) that if you hit the $5K threshold less than 10 days before the end of your billing cycle that's what you can expect.

I received the following offer via e-mail...

20,000
BONUS POINTS
Earn rewards like never before when you upgrade to the new Marriott Rewards Premier Plus Credit Card. Enjoy a Free Night Award (valued at up to 35,000 points) every year after your account anniversary.1 You'll also earn 6X points at 6,500+ Marriott Rewards and SPG hotels worldwide on the other 364 days of the year.2 Plus, you'll receive 20,000 bonus points after you make your first purchase by 12/31/18
Upgrading will increase your annual fee to $95. As long as you continue to meet our credit criteria, your upgrade request will be approved and your new product benefits will take effect in up to 4 business days. You will also receive a letter in the mail explaining the new fee, when it will apply, and your right to reject the change for this new product.
Background:
  • I have have had my current Marriott card for 4+ years so the 24-month bonus rule doesn't affect me.
  • I am thinking about upgrading to the Plus card for the 20,000 bonus points (I don't mind paying $10.00 extra AF for them).
  • I don't care about any nights toward elite status. I'm happy to stay Silver or even have no status.
  • I am at 12/24 new cards currently but will fall below 5/24 in late 2019.
  • I plan to close my Marriott card sometime in 2019 and reapply for it once I'm below 5/24.
Question:
If I upgrade, does the 20,000 point bonus reset the clock on the 24-month bonus rule, thus thwarting my plan to reapply for the card in late 2019?

AFAIK, Chase never offered upgrades with a bonus on any card before, and so there's no history of this. If so, we'll have to wait until some tries this and reports back to figure that out. So for now I would assume it does reset the 24-month bonus rule clock until/unless it's proven otherwise.

I pulled the trigger and upgraded for the 20,000 points. I think I'm OK because of this language...

This product is available to you if you do not have the Marriott Rewards Premier or Premier Plus credit card, or have not received a new cardmember bonus for either of these cards within the past 24 months.
Upgrades aren't typically considered getting a "new" card but technically the Premier Plus would be "new" to me, so who knows? Later, I'll report back whether I get a new-card signup bonus when I cancel and reapply. But that won't be until late 2019, so don't hold your breath.

RNE, wondering if someone who doesn't have to wait that long to get under 5/24 would like to give it a whirl and let us know. My lot is cast, but others might be saved in time.

+1 It seems a good bonus for me in a similar situation. Annual fee is 10 dollars more and 20 k bonus points? Ok I am in. We shall see how it pans out. If it isn't what it seems I can cancel the card. I rarely use it. I have gold status for some reason already. I think from SPG.

Uh oh. Looks like in at least one case the upgrade bonus is considered (note text in red).

AMEX SPG LUXURY CARD: Welcome offer not available to applicants who (i) have or have had The Ritz-Carlton Rewards Credit Card from JP Morgan in the last 30 days, (ii) have acquired The Marriott Rewards Premier Plus Credit Card from Chase, The Marriott Rewards Premier Credit Card from Chase, or The Marriott Rewards Premier Business Credit Card from Chase in the last 90 days, or (iii) received a welcome or upgrade offer for The Marriott Rewards Premier Plus Credit Card from Chase, The Marriott Rewards Premier Credit Card from Chase, or The Marriott Rewards Premier Business Credit Card from Chase in the last 24 months.
Therefore, I'm holding off placing any charges on my upgraded Marriott card since that action is what triggers the bonus. Technically, even though I've upgraded the card, I have not yet received the bonus. This is important, because I may want to apply for the SPG Luxury Card. Still need to research it.

RNE, making this wrinkle known to others considering upgrading their Marriott cards.

So I need about 160K marriott points to get lifetime gold under old qualifications. I currently have Marriott Rewards chase card and Amex SPG card. I've had both for about 5-8 years with no changes or upgrade bonuses.

Is my best bet to get the Marriott Premiere Plus and Premiere Plus Business for the 150K total bonus points? I can get the other 10K easy through stays or spending.

If that is the best route, do I know I need to cancel the Marriott card. Do I need to cancel the SPG card too? And if so, do I need to wait 30 days? If I call in to apply instead of doing it online, will they be able to verify bonus eligibility for me at the time of application?

Thanks, trying to puzzle through all this!

Steve
