New Autograph Collection hotel comes with citizenship

Now, this is interesting.

Anichi Resort & Spa, part of Marriott's Autograph Collection (https://www.anichidevelopment.com/), is scheduled to open in 2019 and includes one notable perk for those who buy into the timeshare property: citizenship in Dominica, an independent, British-aligned country in the West Indies.

For $200,000 plus the $20,000 commission that the hotel charges and applicable government fees, someone can buy a unit at the hotel, which they can use for two weeks out of the year, and get Dominica citizenship.

FYI: if you scroll down tot the bottom of the below page, you'll see a calculator. The government charges a lot of fees, making the cost much more than the $200k investment.

For a $200k share, the total is $263k after all the fees.

The name of the ownership company, Oriental Developers (Caribbean) Ltd., makes it obvious the target.

According to another website, it targets "China, Taiwan, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East."

This was originally called Silver Beach Resort and Spa.

The architect, Arkiplan, is from Dubai.

I think Sharon may have posted a thread on this elsewhere.

I was a bit interested in the sales pitch based on the property but then noted that you buy the property, share in profits (I'm sure there won't be after then management fee), and can only stay in it two weeks a year.

Yeah, I doubt few of the people who are buying into it really care about staying there. It's more about (1) the passport and (2) somewhere to store your money in case there's civil unrest or whatever back home.

I believe the marriott in St Kitts was doing something similiar.

I wonder what the resale value of these is? Probably quite low percentage wise?

Otherwise maybe buy, keep for a year or whatever required then resell after one has the passport.

It would be interesting to know if the fine print required you to spend X number of days per year in Dominica. Some of the other West Indian islands have requirements like that to receive citizenship or take advantage of their tax-haven status. Even the U.S. Virgin Islands has something similar, despite being an American territory. You can't get citizenship if you're a foreign national, but you can get up to 90% off federal personal and business taxes by spending 6 months and 1 day in the Virgin Islands and meeting certain requirements of the territorial government. It's a complete sham.
