Extending Points Expiration Date Discussion Thread

I know that transferring points into or out of a Marriott account does not extend the expiration date of points in that account. However, what happens if I attempt the following?

1) Transfer all X points from my Marriott account to my SPG account at a 3:1 ratio.
2) Wait until the expiration date for my Marriott account has passed.
3) Transfer X/3 points from my SPG account back to my Marriott account at a 1:3 ratio.

Will
1) these actions generate a new expiration date for my Marriott points,
2) Marriott prevent me from transferring the points back after my original expiration date,
3) Marriott immediately delete all my freshly retransferred points after I complete the three steps above,
4) or some other scenario occur?

Thanks!

Interesting question. For those of us no longer having the Canadian Marriott visa card, we cannot earn Marriott points easily from CC spending, and some of us may face the expiration date later.

Add another possibility. The account that's passed the expiration may be set up inactive/expired, and not usable. One would have to call Marriott to re-activate the account, before it'll allow you to transfer points from SPG. At that point, a new 24-month expiration deadline kicks in.

I don't know the answer, and would like to know too.

I would not try this. There have been reports that points transferred into an expired account are lost immediately without notice! I found the cheapest to be to purchase a small number of points and get the extension.

I do not know the exact answer to your questions but I can provide the following situation from a close friend of mine:

- Marriott account had been expired (and lost <1K points) a couple years ago
- Link SPG and Marriott accounts sometimes last year
- Sign-up for SPG AMEX and got 25K+ SPG added to the SPG
- Transfer from SPG over to Marriott
- Make a Marriott booking right away some some leftover
- Send email (not call in) to transfer those leftover Marriott to his brother's Marriott account
- Last minute change in plan and cancel the booking and points left on his account and didn't transfer back to SPG
- and these points are still on his account as of today

hope this help.

Points expiration

Sorry, could not find a recent thread.
What exactly stops point expiration under the new program?
I booked an award room, but the date shown did not change (despite it says "you must earn or use some points until...") even the next day when the redemption appeared in the activities.
I then cancelled the redemption and called to transfer the points out, and the expiration date for the rest of the points still stays the same.
Is this a bug, or you really need a stay to keep the points active?
PS Just logged in and it says my points expired, but it still shows the 700 points in the ballance. Confusing...

The account that received the points remained with its old expiration dade too, so it seems transfers don't count either...

Hi there,

According to 1.6.d. Points Expiration Policy, Members can remain active in the Loyalty Program and retain accumulated Points by earning Points or Miles in the Loyalty Program or redeeming Points in the Loyalty Program at least once every twenty-four (24) months, subject to the exceptions described below.

i. Not all Points activities help maintain active status in the Loyalty Program. The following activities do not count toward maintaining an active status in the Loyalty Program:
A. Gifting or transferring Points; however, converting Points to Miles or Miles to Points does count toward maintaining an active status;
B. Receiving Points as a gift or transfer; or
C. Earning Points through social media programs, such as #BonvoyPoints .

Thanks.
I've read this, but despite making an award booking, it continued to show that last activity was 2 years ago. (A day had passed after the booking and it appeared in the list of activities)
Is this a bug?
Right now it says "Sorry, your points expired due to no qualifying activity on the last 24 hours", but I still have the leftover several thousand points.

i believe “redeem points” mean in Marriott terms (at least prior to Bonvoy) that the award stay has occurred. The mere making an award reservation and canceling is not considered an activity that extends your points unlike say IHG.

FWIW, the expiration date update occurred 4 days after the points from my last Bonvoy Amex statement credited.

OT, but I believe that workaround no longer works with IHG.

the expiration will update for qualified activity and redemption of points is not a qualifying activity until the stay has occurred when the hotel credits the account.

Amex points - Qualifying activity?

I just noticed that point posted from Amex card do not count as qualifying activity, while those posted from the Ritz card do.

Not that it maters in the long run - but it is just strange.

As per my possibly unclear post above, it took 4 days for them to update as qualifying in my account:
- day x: points from Amex Bonvoy post to Bonvoy account
- day (x+4): points expiration date on Bonvoy account updated to account for Amex activity posted 4 days ago.

Transferring points that are about to expire to a family account

Hi,
if one has Marriott points that are set to expire soon, what happens when those points are transferred to a family member account?

1) The transferred points will still expire on the original expiration date, even in someone else's account.
2) The transferred points now follow the expiration date of the account they were transferred into.
3) Some other expiration rule/policy applies in this case.

Thank you-!

Points Expiration

I'm understanding that Marriott points expire after 24 months of no activity or Feb 2021, whichever is later and that redeeming points resets the clock. So does that mean I have to redeem for a STAY by Feb 2021, or do I just have to redeem points by Feb 2021 for a stay at any time. And if I do that and have to cancel the stay later, will I lose all my points?

it's the transaction date, not the stay date. If you cancel it will void the original deduction, it will not be a credit ... so that'll put you at risk.
