In 2015 I was able to get platinum status on Marriott and renew it again in 2016 to have it through 2017. In 2017 I only stayed about 45 nights and was planning on using my United gold status to match to gold Marriott. Yesterday, to my surprise, I received a letter from Marriott on my 2018 platinum benefits. The letter read:
Has anyone received a courtesy status renewal like this before? I'm just curious how often it occurs.
Although you stayed fewer nights than required, I am pleased to renew your Platinum Elite status for 2018 as a thank you for your incredible loyalty.

I received that twice, many years ago, when I was short but close. It happens somewhat regularly, reported here, though doesn't seem to be consistent. Or, at least, we haven't figured out the rules that determine it. I remember people who were 10-15 short that were comped, and others that were 2-3 short that weren't. I'm sure spend level, multi-year history, and other factors, go into the decision.

I got a courtesy Plat regularly before I made Life Plat. Some years I did manage 75 nights, but in others I was usually in the 60 range. I don't remember ever receiving a message about it, maybe because I cleared the Gold threshold easily every year.

I had an agent tell me the other day there is an unpublished qualification criteria for Platinum of 160 nights over 3 years. If you meet that, then you can get renewed as Platinum.

Meanwhile, so close and yet so far from LT Plat...the points just have not caught up with the nights. That should happen this year.

Interesting. My husband has been comped Platinum twice in the last 11 years or so...I wonder if that was why. He didn't meet the requirements this year, so he's expecting a downgrade. But IIRC, the previous 2 years were 76 and 79 nights, so he would definitely be over 160 over the last 3 years. I guess we'll find out in February! He has not gotten an email.

Before I made LTP, I had a few years where I was comped Platinum when I only had 60+ nights the previous year. IIRC one year I even had less than 50 nights. As others have mentioned, I think they look at your stay and spend pattern over a few years when making a decision on giving a courtesy extension of Platinum status for another year. Since they don't publish the actual criteria, all we can do is speculate and try to draw conclusions from the empirical data we have from our collective experience. Finally as CJKATL noted, most of the time I have noticed very little if any difference in treatment in the years I have been Platinum vs. Platinum Premier. This year I have a good upgrade streak going at a property I just started staying at; however, I have no way of knowing if it is because I am PP or if just being vanilla Platinum/LTP would have gotten me the same treatment anyway.

After a few years of 100+ qualifying nights with Marriott I was comped Plat twice even though I fell below the 75 night threshold both years. The first year it happened I had 72 nights. I was thankful for MR's discretion even though not terribly surprised since I'd gotten so close. The next year I was comped Plat again with only 40-ish nights. That year I was thankful and surprised. But after that the comps dropped and I fell to Gold, supported by my LT Gold status.

On my way to LT Platinum I received these comps a couple of times. We think the criteria is 225 nights over the previous 3 years (including the year just past in which you didn't hit the 75 nights to qualify). And I suspect there is some discretion for folks who had a lot of nights in the past but just missed the 225 over the past three.

I think I'm proof that you don't even have to be close. I renewed once with no paid nights.
My post in another thread from a year ago...
I was definitely over 160 for 3 years, best as memory serves, around 200 likely, though I can't swear I might not have hit 225 (especially if rollover nights count twice?).

You don't even have to be close, sometimes.
I earned BiB PLT in 2013 for 2014.
In 2014, I got to 75 nights by way of BiB, rollover, and the credit card, so PLT for 2015.
In 2015, I had 18 nights total, made up of 15 from the credit card, 1 for the credit card free night, and 2 nights on an award stay. So no paid nights at all. And they still extended me PLT for the 2016 year.

Just got mine in the mail after ending last year with 64 nights. I was surprised because I think I got it the previous year as well. I do have the CC also and use it regularly so not sure if that has any impact.

When I click on "Night Details" it says: "16 nights needed to renew Platinum Elite" Yet it shows no rollover nights and I have only stayed 7 nights in 2018. I had about 60 nights last two years. I was Platinum because of my SPG plat status.
I'm wondering if this isn't the courtesy upgrade too....
